We’re coming to a close on 2022 😱.

Now is a good time to reflect on the year past and all the awesome work the guys in the team have put in 💪🏽

This year there has been a big focus on improving on the level of support each client gets.

We did this by bringing on an accountability coach to look at how clients were doing everyday.

Make sure they stayed on top of nutrition, training and were getting the most out of their sessions.

Then providing help with mindset and education where it was needed.

Follow .martin.coaching for daily tips and advice!

When someone is in good shape all it means is they found something that worked for them and stuck with it.

It doesn’t mean the same advice will work for you.

Your starting point, lifestyle and mentality are all completely different and need to be considered when setting out a plan.

I’ll give you an example…

If I want to get lean I can quite happily for 8 weeks eat nothing but protein cookies, yoghurt, chicken breast and veggies.

Sometimes eating chicken breast for breakfast to keep the calories low.

I’ll also say no to any social events that will have drinking or eating involved and be doing 15,000+ a day without fail.

This is in no way saying ‘oh look way I can do’.

I just live a life where it’s easy for me to do this.

My friends know if I’m doing this to leave me be and the way I work means I can go for walks, eat and train exactly when I want to.

Now if I tell most of you to do that there’s no chance of it happening.

You have busy work days, you have social events, there’s things you can’t say no to and above all else you probably don’t want to 😂.

The advice you get needs to be applicable to you and your lifestyle.

We are in the first week of December🎄

You’re probably starting to have work socials, friends socials, holiday shopping and random meet ups.

All this can make sticking to your usual training regime incredibly difficult.

There may be the temptation to decide to give it up for the month and start again properly in January.

What’s a few weeks off right? 🤷🏽‍♂️

The issue is you completely break the habit you worked so hard to get going.

Do you remember how difficult it was to get into it? 😱

Instead of completely stopping, work to maintain the habit as much as possible.

Training twice a week and making sure to track your protein so you hit your target everyday are great examples💪🏽

Keeping those habits going will make it really easy to stack more on them come January when you’re ready to go for it again.

It’s much harder to go from 0 training to 4 sessions a week than it is to go from 2 sessions to 4 a week.

Keep a couple of habits in place and you’ll be thanking yourself come the first week of January 🤩

Not having any support is why you’re never going to reach your goals.

You put so much focus on the best supplements, diet and training plan that you miss what’s most important.

Having support!

Someone that is genuinely invested in your goals and success.

Without it you’re very unlikely to succeed through no fault of your own.

Getting to where you want to be is a long and hard road.

Trust me.

Your family and friends will most likely try to pull you away from your journey.

You’ll start to think it’s pointless and want to give up.

Your own limiting beliefs will tell you you can’t do it.

You need someone to have your corner.

To tell you you’re doing great and to keep going.

No matter what your favourite influencer is telling you there’s no exercises you have to do.

There’s no 1 exercise you’re not doing that’s stopping you from seeing results.

The only time you have to do a certain exercise is if your goal is to get better and stronger at that specific movement.

You’ll see people doing barbell bench press, deadlifts and back squats because they think they have to do them to grow with no regard as to whether they can do them.

A lot of barbell movements are skill based meaning you don’t have to be hugely muscular to lift a massive weight, it’s the whole premise of powerlifting competitions.

You should definitely be able to do these movements as it means you’ll be able to move your body optimally but if the focus is muscle building then they shouldn’t be the focus of your hypertrophy programme.

Dumbbells are good as they tend to offer more range than a barbell and allow the wrist to be in a better position as well as help you work through any imbalances.

Machines work well as it means you can purely focus on the working a muscle through its full range without having to stabilise the weight or worry about getting stuck under it 😅.

Good programming with implement a mixture of barbell, dumbbells and machines depending on the individual goals and ability.

Don’t feel like you have to do something because you saw someone with the body you want doing it.

There’s so many different options out there to get results, find what feels right for you and what you can progress to reach your goals 💪🏽

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐆𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬

When you’re setting yourself a training programme you want to make sure it suits your goals so you can get the most out of it.

If your goal is to generally be in better shape and feel stronger then an all round programme will work well until you have more of a focus on certain aspects.

If you have a specific goal in mind then you want to make sure your programming reflects this.

If the goal is purely to grow your legs then you don’t need to be doing back squats as they’re not optimal for leg growth.

If you want a big back squat then you need to make sure you work on your ankle/ hip mobility, implement pause reps and make sure you have adequate rest and deloads.

If you want to get your first pull up you should probably be working on them in some way at least 3 times a week.

Many people will buy a programme from their favourite influencer because they’re in shape and have a big following but not give any real thought as to whether the programme suits their goals.

This also works for picking a coach if you want to learn how to Olympic lift don’t go to a coach that doesn’t know how to coach it.

Quite often I get people asking if I can review their programme as they’re not seeing the results they want.

Most of the time it isn’t the programme but it’s how they implement it.

But here are some things that can make it good or bad.

A clear sign of bad programming is it being full of exercises you can’t perform correctly and progress.

A great example of this is the barbell back squat.

So many people put this into their programme to grow their legs because they think it’s a must do, but their form is horrific.

Meaning they can’t progress it safely and grow their legs and it’ll often lead to injury.

There’s no problem with trying to improve your form on a specific exercise but you shouldn’t be loading more weight until you can do it correctly.

Another sign of bad programming is setting yourself a number of training days that you can’t do consistently.

When someone starts training again they often make the mistake of aiming to do more days than they can handle.

Leading to loads of missed sessions resulting in not enough training frequency to get the results they’re after.

Set yourself enough training days that you hit every muscle 2-3 times a week and you can do consistently for a long period of time.

Barry came to me a few months ago wanting to get back into shape.

He was no stranger to the gym but the constant lockdowns and now working from home meant he didn’t feel like himself.

He felt a bit shapeless and wanted to get back on the dating scene ASAP.

He also had some back and shoulder pain that worried him and stopped him from being able to really get the most out of his sessions.

Don’t get me wrong a bit of friendly competition with others can be exactly what you need to light a fire in your belly and drive yourself towards your goals.

The only issue is when it comes to success people compare and compete with others in their head in a way that isn’t conducive to their progress.

When you think of being in a competition with someone you think of there being a clear winner and loser.

When people do this when it comes to someone else’s success it puts up the idea that if someone else is seeing amazing progress it somehow means that they can’t see the same results.

𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙚𝙣𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙨𝙪𝙘𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙜𝙤 𝙖𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙!

We’re not pulling from a limited well of success that’ll run dry at some point.

Someone else succeeding doesn’t take away from what you can do.

Congratulate them and see what you can learn from them.

Where did they start from?

What struggles did they have?
