It’s always so rewarding to see that patients are delighted with their cataract surgery results.
Take a look at this wonderful article written about one of Professor Muhtaseb’s patients who underwent cataract surgery recently.

She couldn’t read or see the TV and her son was worried that it was affecting her mental health.

Today I had the pleasure of working for iLase The Eye Surgeon.

Did you know that we are still performing eye surgery for procedures such as cataract removal privately? Waiting time to surgery can be tailored to your convenience.

It was lovely to see Gabby, our Professor’s PA today, to see what happens in the admin office and for me to collect supplies for the great optometrists that trust us to treat their patients 🤩

Over the years, I’ve heard many misconceptions about how cataract surgery is performed.
In general terms, cataract surgery is a very safe, efficient and highly successful procedure which is performed mostly under local anaesthetic, although at iLase, a general anaesthetic is available if required.
If you have any queries at all, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

A little piece of optical history....

Sir Harold Ridley was the first to successfully implant an intraocular lens on 29 November 1949, at St Thomas' Hospital at London.
That lens was manufactured by the Rayner company of Brighton, East Sussex, England from Perspex CQ polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) made by ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries). It is said the idea of implanting an intraocular lens came to him after an intern asked him why he was not replacing the lens he had removed during cataract surgery. The acrylic plastic material was chosen because Ridley noticed it was inert after seeing RAF (Royal Air Force) pilots of World War II with pieces of shattered canopies in their eyes (this acrylic resin is known by several trade names including Lucite and Plexiglas).

The intraocular lens did not find widespread acceptance in cataract surgery until the 1970s, when further developments in lens design and surgical techniques had come about.

The World Health Organisation has projected increased IOL surgeries to reach 32 million worldwide by 2020.

Did you know that you don't have to wait for cataracts to develop before having replacement lens surgery?

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is a surgical procedure which involves replacing the natural lens inside your eye with a synthetic lens, the power of which is carefully calculated to correct your vision.
This can be a single vision (Monofocal) lens or a Multifocal lens (for those who need correction for distance and reading powers).

The tiny synthetic lens is intended to last a lifetime and whilst benefitting from optimum vision correction, you also won't develop cataracts in the future.
