This simple, 10 second test of frailty is easy at 5, 15 and even 30, but how about at 50?
My 50-year-old friend thought it sounded easy, but when she tried ...
She struggled.
She couldn’t get up from the floor without using her hands. She also had no idea this is a recognised marker of frailty. She's probably not alone.
The Sitting–Rising Test (SRT) is a simple predictor of health and longevity.
In a study of 9,000 people, those aged 46–75 with lower scores were found to be at a higher risk of premature death.
The SRT tests strength, balance, coordination, flexibility and control all at once. We need these for everyday things - picking up the post, getting out of a chair without arms.
And more than that- it’s about maintaining independence, choice and dignity.
To increase her score and lower her risks of frailty, I suggested my friend try the following:
While the kettle is boiling…
– squats
– wall press-ups
– water bottle lifts
Can you get up from the floor without using your hands? If not, I suggest you try them, too.
This simple test is a small part of the over Midlife Clarity Check-in that we offer at Hexagon Health.
