Flu can be very serious for young children, but the nasal spray vaccine reduces the risk of serious illness.

The flu vaccine has been used safely for decades, with over 25,000 children aged 2-3 in Wales getting vaccinated through a flu nasal spray last year.

The flu nasal spray vaccine can’t give your child flu — it trains their immune system to fight the virus.

‼️PLEASE SHARE ‼️

We are experiencing significant pressure across our hospital sites today which is having an impact on the Emergency Departments within Princess of Wales, Prince Charles and Royal Glamorgan Hospitals.
We are urging the public to please only attend the Emergency Department in an emergency and to consider other healthcare options available to you.

What is a medical emergency? Some examples include:
• Unconsciousness
• Difficulty in breathing
• Suspected heart attack
• Serious injury or heavy blood loss
• Sudden weakness or speech problems

If your condition is urgent, but not life-threatening, you can:
• Visit the NHS 111 Wales website for advice on your condition and the next steps to take
• Contact a member of the Primary Care team in the community
• Visit a Minor Injuries Unit if you have a new injury
• Call 111 to access urgent advice and guidance and the Out of Hours service

We thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

‼️RHANNWCH OS GWELWCH YN DDA‼️

Rydym yn profi pwysau sylweddol ar draws ein safleoedd ysbyty heddiw, sy’n effeithio ar yr Adrannau Achosion Brys yn Ysbyty Tywysoges Cymru, Ysbyty’r Tywysog Siarl ac Ysbyty Brenhinol Morgannwg.

Rydym yn annog y cyhoedd i fynychu’r Adran Achosion Brys mewn argyfwng yn unig ac ystyried yr opsiynau gofal iechyd eraill sydd ar gael i chi.

Beth yw argyfwng meddygol? Enghreifftiau yw:

• Anymwybodolrwydd
• Anhawster anadlu
• Amau trawiad ar y galon
• Anafiad difrifol neu waedu trwm
• Gwendid sydyn neu broblemau lleferydd

Os yw’ch cyflwr yn frys ond heb fygwth bywyd, gallwch:

A special thank you for our Resus Team and Cardiac Monitoring Unit at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital and the University of Hospital Wales Cardiology teams. 🌈

“A huge thank you to all the consultants and nursing staff following my heart issues. The care provided was excellent, swift and professional. Their kindness, care and compassion was beyond words, this is what the NHS provides.

My aftercare in CMU again excellent, couldn’t ask for better. Medically I’m on the mend but without their skills and knowledge I would be in a difficult situation.

Thank you not only helping me, but this includes my family. Priceless.”

Have your say: https://ctmuhb.nhs.wales/patient-advice/patient-feedback-civica/

Diolch enfawr i'n Tîm Adfywio, yr Uned Monitro Cardiaidd yn Ysbyty Brenhinol Morgannwg a thimau Cardioleg Ysbyty Prifysgol Cymru. 🌈

“Diolch yn fawr iawn i’r holl ymgynghorwyr a staff nyrsio yn dilyn fy mhroblemau calon. Roedd y gofal a ddarparwyd yn rhagorol, yn gyflym ac yn broffesiynol. Roedd eu caredigrwydd, eu gofal a'u tosturi y tu hwnt i eiriau, dyma beth mae'r GIG yn ei ddarparu.

Roedd fy ôl-ofal yn CMU eto'n rhagorol, allwn i ddim gofyn am well. Yn feddygol, rydw i ar iacháu ond heb eu sgiliau a'u gwybodaeth byddwn i mewn sefyllfa anodd.

Diolch nid yn unig am fy helpu i, ond mae hyn yn cynnwys fy nheulu. Amhrisiadwy.”

An early flu season has started in Wales and the rest of the UK.

Getting the flu vaccination helps to protect yourself and others ahead of winter, when viruses tend to circulate and the NHS faces increased pressure on its services.

The flu vaccine has been used safely for decades, with nearly a million people in Wales getting vaccinated every year. The vaccine can’t give you flu and side effects are usually mild and short-lived.

You should have the flu vaccine if you are:

• Pregnant
• Aged 65 or over (or turn 65 before the end of the flu vaccination programme – usually march each year), or
• Aged six months to 64 years with a long-term health condition (view the list on our website - via the hyperlink below)

Even if you feel well, you are at higher risk of getting seriously ill from flu if any of the above apply to you.

The following people should also have the flu vaccine to help protect themselves and those around them.

• Children aged two and three years (age on 31 August 2025)
• School-age children and young people from reception to year 11
• Unpaid and paid carers
• First responders and members of voluntary organisations providing planned emergency first aid
• Those who live with someone who has a weak immune system

A double welcome to the world this week, to Jude and Rowan. 💙🩷 Mam, Rachel, has a special thank you for staff at the Princess of Wales Hospital and Tirion Birth Centre for their support.

"Thank you so much to those at POW Ward 12 and Labour Ward who helped bring our twinnies into the world, especially Bec Clarke who was the biggest support through the induction, epidurals and caesarean section.

A further thank you goes out to those in Tirion Birth Centre who helped us with feeding support when we were discharged from POW.

Whilst we won’t be rushing back, the experience couldn’t have been made any more dreamy for us all."

Croeso dwbl i'r byd yr wythnos hon, i Jude a Rowan. 💙🩷 Mae gan Mam, Rachel, ddiolch arbennig i staff Ysbyty Tywysoges Cymru a Chanolfan Genedigaeth Tirion am eu cefnogaeth.

"Diolch o galon i bawb ar Ward 12 a’r Ward Llafur yn Ysbyty Tywysoges Cymru a helpodd i ddod â’n efeilliaid i’r byd, yn enwedig Bec Clarke, a fu’n gefn anhygoel drwy’r broses ymsefydlu, yr epidwralau a’r toriad Cesaraidd.

Mae diolch pellach yn mynd allan i'r rhai yng Nghanolfan Genedigaeth Tirion a wnaeth ein helpu gyda chymorth bwydo pan gawsom ein rhyddhau o Ysbyty Tywysoges Cymru.

Er na fyddwn ni’n brysio’n ôl, doedd dim modd i’r profiad fod yn fwy breuddwydiol i ni i gyd.”

✔️During the summer, Healthcare Inspectorate Wales conducted an inspection of the Emergency Dept at Royal Glamorgan Hospital. Today we welcome the publication of the positive findings report which highlights the work and commitment of our team in the department.

Gethin Hughes, Chief Operating Officer for Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board said: “We very much welcome the findings of today’s Healthcare Inspectorate Wales’ (HIW) report following the recent inspection of the Emergency Department at Royal Glamorgan Hospital. We are pleased that the report recognises the dedication and professionalism of our staff, who are committed to provide safe, compassionate and respectful care to patients, often in highly demanding circumstances.

“As a health board, we are encouraged by the acknowledgement of the wealth of good practice - including the effective prioritisation of patients in the department based on their clinical need and the pace of ambulance handover processes, which are among the best in Wales. The report also recognises the positive impact of our new paediatric area, and the valuable contribution of our specialist nursing roles.

“We also acknowledge that too many of our patients experience delays in the time they take to access care beyond the Emergency Department driven by the ongoing challenges facing all health boards caused by wider pressure across the health and social care system, which affect patient flow and waiting times.

“We are already implementing a comprehensive improvement plan to address the areas identified in the report, including:

Staff training compliance – we are working with our practice development nurse within the ED to ensure a robust staff training plan is in place. We have also appointed a pan CTM Senior Nurse for Education to support with internal education.

Patient comfort - replacing seating within the department to support our patients within a reclining chair where patients are offered blankets, eye masks and ear plugs to improve patient experience.

Hydration and nutrition – we are installing water fountains in the department and the development of specific patient surveys has been undertaken to support engagement with our patients and their families about food provision.

“Our priority remains to ensure that every person who attends our Emergency Department receives high-quality, safe and compassionate care.”

"Rydym eisoes yn gweithredu cynllun gwella cynhwysfawr i fynd i'r afael â'r meysydd a nodwyd yn yr adroddiad, gan gynnwys:
• Cydymffurfiaeth hyfforddiant staff – rydym yn gweithio gyda'n nyrs datblygu ymarfer yn yr Adran Argyfwng i sicrhau bod cynllun hyfforddi staff cadarn ar waith. Rydym hefyd wedi penodi Uwch-Nyrs Addysg ar draws y CTM i gefnogi addysg fewnol.

“You never know who you’re sitting next to, who you’re seeing in the supermarket – or who they’re caring for at home.”

Louise from Pontypridd has had the flu vaccine every year for the past seven years. As a former carer for her mum and teaching assistant, she knows how important it is to protect those around her – especially young children, those with a long-term health condition, pregnant people and elderly family members.

“I used to get vaccinated when I cared for my mum. I have a health condition and could be very poorly with flu, but not only that – I do it to protect the children I work with and my own family. It’s quick, easy, and I’ve never had side effects.”

Louise highlights how easy it is to get vaccinated locally: “Ashgrove Surgery in Pontypridd was doing walk-ins – I got a text, popped in, and it was done before I even realised!”

Flu can be life-threatening, especially for those most at risk. Protect yourself and your community.

There will be an additional walk-in event to have a flu vaccination at Ashgrove Surgery on 17 November from 5 – 7pm.

"Dydych chi byth yn gwybod pwy rydych chi'n eistedd wrth ymyl, pwy rydych chi'n ei weld yn yr archfarchnad - neu bwy maen nhw'n gofalu amdano gartref."

Mae Louise o Bontypridd wedi cael y brechlyn ffliw bob blwyddyn ers saith mlynedd. Fel cyn-ofalwr i'w mam a chynorthwyydd addysgu, mae hi'n gwybod pa mor bwysig yw amddiffyn y rhai o'i chwmpas - yn enwedig plant ifanc, y rhai sydd â chyflwr iechyd hirdymor, pobl feichiog ac aelodau oedrannus o'r teulu.

"Roeddwn i'n arfer cael fy brechu pan oeddwn i'n gofalu am fy mam. Mae gen i gyflwr iechyd a gallwn fod yn wael iawn gyda'r ffliw, ond nid yn unig hynny - rwy'n ei wneud i amddiffyn y plant rwy'n gweithio gyda nhw a fy nheulu fy hun. Mae'n gyflym, yn hawdd, ac nid wyf erioed wedi cael sgîl-effeithiau."

Mae Louise yn tynnu sylw at ba mor hawdd yw cael eich brechu'n lleol: "Roedd Meddygfa Ashgrove ym Mhontypridd yn gwneud sesiynau cerdded i mewn – cefais neges destun, wnes i alw heibio, ac fe gafodd ei wneud cyn i mi sylweddoli hyd yn oed!"

Gall ffliw fod yn fygythiad i fywyd, yn enwedig i'r rhai sydd fwyaf mewn perygl. Amddiffyn eich hun a'ch cymuned.

Bydd digwyddiad galw heibio ychwanegol i gael brechiad rhag y ffliw ym Meddygfa Ashgrove ar 17 Tachwedd rhwng 5 a 7yp.

Support our smoke-free sites – one button press at a time. 🚭

Hospitals in Wales are smoke-free by law, and our health board has a policy of no va**ng indoors or outdoors. Second-hand to***co smoke is very harmful, and we’re committed to protecting the health of everyone on our hospital sites.

From today (3 November 2025), there are now three smoke-free loudspeakers at entrances in the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Prince Charles Hospital and Princess of Wales Hospital to support smoke-free sites.

If you see someone smoking or va**ng near the entrance, you can help by pressing the smoke-free button. It plays a short message reminding people that smoking or va**ng isn’t allowed.

Why it matters:

✅ Protects everyone from the harms of second-hand to***co smoke
✅ Supports people trying to quit smoking by reducing triggers to smoke
✅ Reduces litter and fire risk from cigarette waste
✅ Prevents fire alarm activations from va**ng indoors

Every press makes a difference. Thank you for helping us stay smoke-free.

Our free and friendly Help Me Quit services can help anyone looking to quit smoking or va**ng. If you would like to give it a go, visit the Help Me Quit Wales website or call 0800 085 2219.
