20/03/2026

Catch up, walk in clinics for the MenACWY vaccine are being held at Barry Hospital and Maelfa Wellbeing Hub on Saturdays. Please be aware that this is NOT for the Men B vaccination. Further information can be found in the original post.
If you are unsure of you or your child's vaccination status, please call the Vaccination Service on 02921 841234.

Catch-up clinics are being held for teenagers and young adults who have not had an important meningitis vaccination.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is holding walk-in clinics for young people in Year 9 and up to the age of 25 who have previously missed their MenACWY vaccination appointment.

Walk-in clinics are being held every Saturday (starting March 21) until further notice at the following locations:
- Barry Hospital, Colcot Road, CF62 8YH (9am-4.30pm)
- Maelfa Wellbeing Hub, Llanedeyrn, Cardiff, CF23 9PN (9am-4.30pm)

Young people aged 13-14 (school Year 9) are invited by GPs in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan to receive this vaccine as part of their routine schedule but sometimes these appointments can get missed.

The MenACWY vaccine protects against meningococcal disease type A, C, W and Y.

While rare, meningococcal disease can be very serious and require urgent hospital treatment. It can lead to life-changing disabilities such as amputations, hearing loss, brain damage and scars.

If parents of younger children would like information about their meningitis B and pneumococcal vaccination status - both of which are given to children as part of their routine vaccination schedule up to the age of 2 - please call the vaccination service on 02921 841234 (lines open Mon-Fri 9am-4.45pm). You can also book any missed doses with your GP.

Understandably, we are receiving lots of calls at the practice about Meningitis vaccines.

The recent outbreak in Canterbury, Kent is Meningitis B. This vaccine was introduced as part of children’s routine immunisation programme in Wales on 1st September 2015 for babies born after 1st July 2015. Therefore, anyone born before 1st July 2015 will not have received the Men B vaccine. We are unable to offer this vaccine on the NHS to older teenagers or young adults (even if they were born after 1st July 2015, and declined the vaccine at the time), so they will need to access this vaccine privately. Some pharmacies offer the vaccine as well as travel clinics.

There is another meningitis vaccine called MenACWY, which protects against the A,C, W and Y strains of meningitis. This vaccine is given to children when they are in Year 9 at school (age 13-14). If you or your child have not had their MenACWY vaccine, we can offer this vaccine to them until their 25th birthday as part of the catch-up programme. and strongly advise that everyone has this vaccine before going to University.

⚠️ It’s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia as serious illness can take place quickly.

If you, your child, or a loved one, become unwell please contact your GP or 111 ☎️

💊Electronic Prescribing (EPS) is coming to Woodlands Medical Centre on 5th March.

🔔What this means for our patients:
* Repeat prescriptions still need to be requested in the same way that you currently do (i.e via NHS Wales App, email, repeat slip etc)
* Instead of a paper prescription, an electronic prescription will be securely sent to a pharmacy of your choice
* Prescriptions can be tracked at all times, meaning they can't be lost

🔔 What you need to do?
* Please make sure that you nominate a pharmacy as this tells us where to send your prescriptions electronically. Just speak the staff at your usual pharmacy and they will take care of the rest
* Please note that If you have an existing preferred pharmacy set up with us, this will unfortunately be deleted when we migrate to EPS, so you will need to nominate a pharmacy again

This a NHS Wales service which is free and secure.

If you have been referred by your GP to see a specialist, you can now track where you are on the NHS waiting list through the NHS Wales App. This is a recent addition to the App and only applies to patients referred from December 2025 onwards.
Registering for the NHS Wales App is easy and you can also request your repeat medications through it. Please visit https://app.nhs.wales/login to sign up

People in Wales can now track their NHS waiting list progress on the NHS Wales app🙌

The latest update lets people check their waiting list status, view hospital referrals and appointment details, and access information to help manage their health while waiting for treatment.

More than 650,000 people have already registered to use the bilingual app. The app aims to improve access to healthcare services for people registered with a GP in Wales and is a key part of the Welsh Government’s digital transformation strategy for healthcare.

**November December Activity Data**
Demand is extremely high in the practice and the high number of patients not turning up for their appointments means we can't offer these to other people in need. Please remember that a lot of common ailments can be treated at your local pharmacy for free including scabies, cold sores, sore throats and urine infections (females under 65 years). Please ask to be seen under the Common Ailments Scheme.
