🍕🥗Creating a Balanced Meal 🍇🍫

What is a balanced meal?

A meal that provides you with nutrients and energy to keep you full and nourished throughout the day

Made up of four components:
~ Protein
~ Carbohydrate
~ Fat
~ And plenty of fibrous fruit and veg

It doesn’t have to be complicated or time consuming, and most importantly you can add whatever you like. Pick one source of protein, one carb, a portion of fat and as many fruit or veg as you like. Combine it all and you have yourself a balanced meal.

Pictured is orzo pasta mixed with pesto, fresh tomatoes, beetroot, spring onions, rocket and a sprinkle of feta cheese on top.

Calorie Labelled Menus: Problematic or is it the answer to tackling obesity related issues?

Yesterday, the government introduced the labelling of calories mandatory in out-of-home businesses with 250 or more members of staff.

So will it help people make healthier choices, or will it contribute towards harmful thoughts and behaviours?

What calorie information doesn’t tell us is the nutritional value of a dish, meaning we look at calories as a negative yet we need them as fuel to survive. Instead, we should be looking at a dish and think, is it providing me with all the essential nutrients I need in a meal to satisfy my hunger and keep me full?

The numbers on our food may be used as a guideline as it is an important tool in fighting obesity. However, every individual will absorb different amounts of calories and nutrients released from foods due to our genetic differences, therefore, it is important not to fixate on calories alone.

Beat have expressed that it can cause anxiety and destress for those suffering with an eating disorder or disordered eating, creating the feeling of guilt around the foods we enjoy.


So how can we address fighting obesity? educate nutrition from a young age; shape positive eating behaviours from a young age; tackle food poverty so that everyone has access to nutritious foods; teach people how to cook from scratch; and understanding nutrition and seasonality.

In this case, counting calories is not the answer.

Spinach and Feta Cheese Pancakes 🥞

65g of plaint flour
1 egg, whisked
Good splash of milk
Salt & pepper
100g of spinach
30g of feta cheese, crumbled

Wilt the spinach in a little olive oil in a frying pan and set aside to cool. In a mixing bowl place the flour, egg, milk, salt and pepper and give it a good mix until you achieve a thick liquid consistency. Mix in the feta cheese and wilted spinach. Using the same pan as you used to wilt the spinach, pour a small amount of batter to the frying pan on a medium heat and cook for 2/3mins on each side. Batter should make 3 pancakes (serves 1, double the quantities of the ingredients to make more pancakes). I served mine with beetroot and shallots dressed in balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

It has been a little while Instagram ✌🏼

Returning with a simple yet delicious recipe to spice up your Wednesday 🌶

Spring Onion and Tomato Rice Vermicelli noodles 🍜

Serves 2
200g rice vermicelli noodles
500g cherry tomatoes, chopped
14 spring onions, roughly chopped
2 cloves of garlic, finely grated
4cm cube of fresh ginger, finely grated
1/2 or 1 whole chilli, finely sliced
2 tbsp soya sauce (reduced salt if possible)
2 tbsp white wine vinegar
1 tbsp sesame oil

Add boiling hot water to a large mixing bowl and place the noodles in for 2 minutes. Once the 2 minutes is done, remove the noodles to cold water for a further 1 minute.
Meanwhile mix together the soya sauce, white wine vinegar, sesame oil, garlic, ginger and chilli to make the dressing.
Chop the vegetables and set aside.
Drain the noodles and add the dressing and the chopped veg, mix everything together and serve.

This recipe is a great accompaniment to beef strips, chicken, king prawns, salmon or tofu for your protein element.

Mornings are starting to get colder and it’s time to re-introduce baked oats into our breakfast routines 🥣

Baked oats is a prefect way to mix up your normal oats, and somehow taste that little bit more indulgent.
