What happens when sport is shaped around the needs of children?
Hoci Cymru listened to children with additional learning needs who said they would be more likely to take part if sessions worked better for them. Using insight from the 2022 School Sport Survey, Hoci Cymru worked with Disability Sport Wales to make meaningful changes to hockey’s accessibility and inclusivity. 🏑
The result was a simple but powerful shift in how the game is delivered. By keeping instructions short and clear, demonstrating activities rather than over-explaining, and creating calmer sessions without whistles, hockey started to feel more like play. Sessions became more flexible, with shorter bursts instead of long drills, and children were given real choice through different equipment, colours and ways to play. A pitch wasn’t essential either. Hockey could happen almost anywhere.
The impact so far: over 700 children and young people across West Wales have had the chance to try inclusive hockey, with those lessons now helping shape delivery in North and East Wales too. 🏑
