Playing sport, particularly football, has become a lifeline. It’s a proven, non-medicinal way to slow the progression of Parkinson’s, which currently has no cure and still relies on medications developed in the 1950s. Weekly training and matches not only improve physical health but also provide vital mental and emotional support.

Information:
The Wales Transplant Football Team was founded in 2017, originally through the Can Do Project, and made its competitive debut at the 2019 Transplant Games in Newport. Since then, the team has represented Wales at the British Transplant Games, the Transplant Sports Football Tournament, and the first-ever Transplant World Cup in Italy (2024).

Our aims and goals are:
• To provide opportunities for transplant recipients and those with long-term health conditions to participate in competitive football in a safe, inclusive environment.
• To promote organ donation awareness through football.
• To create a supportive football community where players of all abilities can train, compete, and enjoy the game.
• To grow pathways for players, from grassroots to representing Wales at national and international transplant events.
• To contribute positively to disability and inclusion football in Wales, in line with FAW’s vision of football being for everyone from the park to the world stage.

The team has already built a strong presence in international transplant sport, helping raise awareness of organ donation and healthy lifestyles post-transplant. By joining the SWPDL, we aim to further integrate into the Welsh football community, giving players more regular competition and development opportunities.
