Data indicates that men suffer from skin conditions just as much as women. The key difference is that men usually remain silent about their problems due to embarrassment. In honour of International Men’s Day, we’re focusing on 5 skin and scalp disorders that affect men.

1. Folliculitis barbae – an itchy inflammation of hair follicles in skin areas prone to shaving
2. Rhinophyma – a type of rosacea that presents as excess tissue and thickening of the skin on the nose is more prevalent in men
3. Acne keloidalis nuchae – a chronic inflammation of the hair follicles of the neck that causes firm, keloid-like scars and is common in skin of colour
4. Hair loss – androgenetic alopecia or male pattern baldness is the most common form of hair loss in men, affecting 30-50% of men by age 50
5. Psoriasis – a skin condition that causes flaky patches of skin which form scales has a slightly higher prevalence in men

How does acne affect men?

During adolescence, acne is slightly more prevalent in males due to higher testosterone levels, which increase oil production.

Adult acne is more common in women, though, largely due to hormonal fluctuations caused by menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause, yet in men it can be more severe, also affect the chest, back and shoulders and resultant acne scarring can be more pronounced.

Friday feedback!

“I visited the clinic for the first time to have some moles and lesions removed and saw Dr Rachel Abbott and her assistant. Both were absolutely fantastic, professional and caring. I had been waiting on the NHS to have a possible skin cancer reviewed and Dr Abbott gave me her assessment there and then clearly and for no extra charge, putting my mind at ease. There was no hard sell, pushing me for any procedures, just clear explanations and clinically she was excellent in removing my moles. Well done all – you’re setting a proud example for your profession in a private clinic.”

“I was quite anxious attending my first consultation but was pleasantly surprised how relaxed the clinic was; not feeling as if I was going into a medical clinic. The ladies on reception were so lovely and chatty so that put me at ease immediately.

Then I met Cory the lady who was to treat me. I feel I have made a new friend in her she’s so lovely and absolutely amazing at her job. My treatment is finished now and I’m rather sad I don’t need to go back again!

Thank you so much Specialist Skin Clinic, you have all been amazing.”

Eczema Awareness Month is a time to shine a light on a condition that affects millions worldwide. If you’re one of the many eczema sufferers, you’re likely familiar with the challenges of managing this skin condition.

A dermatologist can prescribe treatments which can more quickly and effectively control and manage eczema, eliminating all the symptoms so that there is no more discomfort. In many cases, this level of comfort can then be maintained.

Changes in your hormone levels during the menopause impact most women’s skin in some way.

1️⃣ Increased dryness: As oestrogen levels decline, the skin loses its ability to retain hydration, leading to increased dryness, tightness, and flakiness. This can also cause itching (pruritus).
2️⃣ Impaired skin barrier: A weakened skin barrier can make your skin more sensitive and reactive to products and environmental factors.
3️⃣ Dramatic loss of collagen: During the first five years of menopause, women can lose up to 30% of their skin’s collagen. Collagen is the protein that provides firmness and structure, and its rapid loss leads to a reduction in skin elasticity.
4️⃣ Acne outbreaks: The menopausal hormonal imbalance can trigger the sebaceous glands to produce more oil (sebum), which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts.
5️⃣ Increased hyperpigmentation: Hormonal changes can also influence melanin production, leading to the development of new dark spots or making existing ones more noticeable.
