Community pharmacies are seeing an increase in demand in people requesting tests for sore throat. While some pharmacies offer β€˜sore throat test and treat’ service, this is for patients aged 6 years and over with sore throat and tonsillitis symptoms. Swab tests are only taken where symptoms are suggestive of bacterial infection, and antibiotics may only be provided if appropriate following a positive swab result.

Patients with scarlet fever are EXCLUDED from this service.

The sore throat test and treat service may not be available in all participating pharmacies at all times and it is highly recommended that patients telephone ahead of presenting at the pharmacy to confirm capacity to deliver the service at this busy time. To find your nearest participating pharmacy use the pharmacy finder here https://111.wales.nhs.uk/localservices/?s=Pharmacy&pc=n&sort=default

The service is not intended as a Strep A screening service in the absence of sore throat symptoms or to diagnose or treat Scarlet fever. Patients with symptoms of Scarlet fever should contact their GP or NHS 111 Wales- for more information on scarlet fever see https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/scarlet-fever/

This month is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month!

The bowel is part of the digestive system and is divided into the small bowel and large bowel. The large bowel is made up of the colon, re**um and a**s. The term bowel cancer is normally used to talk about colon and re**al cancer. It can also be used when talking about a**l, small bowel, and anore**al melanoma cancer.

When it is found early, bowel cancer can usually be treated very successfully. It is important to be aware of changes that could be a sign of bowel cancer:
πŸ”΅ Bleeding from the back passage or blood in your poo.
πŸ”΅ Looser poo or diarrhoea that lasts for 3 weeks or more.
πŸ”΅ A feeling that your bowel is not properly empty after going to the toilet.
πŸ”΅ A pain or lump in the tummy or back passage.
πŸ”΅ Loss of weight or appetite.
πŸ”΅ Feeling more tired than usual for some time, with no obvious reason.

Bowel problems are very common, so these symptoms may not be caused by cancer. It is still important to get them checked out by your GP. Do not feel embarrassed to speak to your doctor about your symptoms. Conversations like this are part of their everyday job. See our website for more information on bowel cancer here: https://www.macmillan.org.uk/cancer-information-and-support/bowel-cancer

(Please note that the illustration is a simplified version of the bowel).
