Exceptions will be considered, particularly for those patients who are critically ill, receiving end of life care, birth partners and the Children's Hospital for Wales. We will review these restrictions next week if the situation has improved.

Ystyrir eithriadau, yn enwedig ar gyfer y cleifion hynny sy'n ddifrifol wael, sy'n derbyn gofal diwedd oes, partneriaid geni ac Ysbyty Plant Cymru. Byddwn yn adolygu'r cyfyngiadau hyn yr wythnos nesaf os bydd y sefyllfa wedi gwella.

Due to the Norovirus outbreak that is being experienced across our Health Board, we have made the decision to implement a No Visiting Policy.

This is not a decision that we have taken lightly, and we recognise the importance of support from family and friends when patients are in hospital. However, to help us protect our patients, staff and visitors and reduce the spread of the virus, we are closing the Health Board to all general visiting.

Exceptions will be considered, particularly for those patients who are critically ill, receiving end of life care, birth partners and the Children's Hospital for Wales. We will review these restrictions next week if the situation has improved.

Visitors who meet our visiting criteria will be expected to maintain good hygiene practice by washing their hands thoroughly with soap and water, using hand sanitising gels to prevent infection and adhering to Infection Prevention and Control precautions.

Meet Mary, Jade and Tessymol from Bumble Bee Ward at Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital for Wales 🐝

Bumble Bee Ward is a dedicated paediatric short stay unit that allows children who require routine surgery to attend hospital for an operation and be discharged home the same day.

The unit has 12 beds, a dedicated nursing team and is located close to the operating theatres — meaning children can have their pre-surgery checks, operation and recover in the same place.

The team have recently implemented changes to improve patient flow and efficiency, including having a dedicated nursing team, introducing an assistant nurse practitioner, and trialling the use of trolley beds so children can be transported easier. These changes mean the unit is better able to better protect elective planned surgeries and provide life-changing care to children faster.

Cathryn Davies, ward manager, said: “Bumble Bee allows us to be more efficient and protect elective surgeries so we’re able to plan as best we can and treat children as quickly as possible.

“Most children will be able to go home the same day, which also makes the experience better for children and their families. Having an operation is never easy and we want children to have a positive experience with us and return home as soon as they can.”

Dewch i gwrdd â Mary, Jade a Tessymol o’r Ward Gwenynen yn Ysbyty Arch Noa i Blant Cymru 🐝

Mae’r Ward Gwenynen yn uned arhosiad byr pediatrig bwrpasol sy’n galluogi plant sydd angen llawdriniaeth reolaidd i fynd i’r ysbyty i gael y llawdriniaeth a’u rhyddhau adref ar yr un diwrnod.

Mae gan yr uned 12 gwely, tîm nyrsio pwrpasol ac mae wedi’i lleoli’n agos at y theatrau llawdriniaeth — sy’n golygu y gall plant gael eu harchwiliadau cyn y llawdriniaeth, y llawdriniaeth a’r cyfnod adfer yn yr un lle.

Mae’r tîm wedi rhoi newidiadau ar waith yn ddiweddar i wella llif cleifion ac effeithlonrwydd, gan gynnwys cael tîm nyrsio pwrpasol, cyflwyno ymarferydd nyrsio cynorthwyol, a threialu’r defnydd o welyau troli fel bod plant yn gallu cael eu cludo’n haws. Mae’r newidiadau hyn yn golygu bod yr uned mewn gwell sefyllfa i amddiffyn llawdriniaethau dewisol wedi’u cynllunio a darparu gofal sy’n newid bywydau i blant yn gyflymach.

Dywedodd Cathryn Davies, rheolwr y ward: “Mae’r Ward Gwenynen yn ein galluogi i fod yn fwy effeithlon ac amddiffyn llawdriniaethau dewisol fel ein bod yn gallu cynllunio gorau y gallwn ni a thrin plant cyn gynted â phosibl.

“Bydd y rhan fwyaf o blant yn gallu mynd adref ar yr un diwrnod, sydd hefyd yn gwneud y profiad yn well i blant a’u teuluoedd. Nid yw cael llawdriniaeth byth yn hawdd ac rydym eisiau i blant gael profiad cadarnhaol gyda ni a dychwelyd adref cyn gynted ag y gallant.”

Look out for our charity ambassador, paediatric orthopaedic surgeon, Clare Carpenter, in tonight’s episode of the BBC documentary series, Saving Lives.

This week’s episode features another busy Monday morning in the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital. Orthopaedic surgeon Clare Carpenter’s operating list is being pressurised by an influx of emergency cases which have arrived over the weekend, meaning there’s currently not enough beds or nurses for all the children who need surgery. One of the emergencies is seven-year-old Olly, who broke his leg at school and was air lifted to hospital. Olly has already broken his femur in the same place once before and needs an urgent operation to stabilise his break with specially designed metal rods that will extend as he grows. Clare and her team are also determined to find out what’s causing Olly’s bones to break more easily and will take biopsies during the operation for extensive testing. As Olly’s Dad waits patiently at his bedside, Clare is determined to get through as many operations as possible but will she be able to balance the needs of her electives and the emergencies?

The paediatric theatre suites where Clare and her colleagues perform the surgery you see on tonight’s and previous episodes of Saving Lives exist because of donations made by people like you. As a supporter of the charity, you really are helping Clare and her incredible team of surgeons to save young lives. Thank you

Tune into BBC Wales or BBC tonight at 9.

Sue has worked at the children’s hospital since the doors first opened to patients 18 years ago. Today, after 35 years of service within the NHS, she retires.

As you can imagine, Sue has worked with thousands of children and families during her career. Having started as a nursery nurse in Llandough Hospital in in 1989, she went on to qualify as a play specialist in 1992 before becoming play specialist team manager at the newly opened Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital for Wales in 2004.

Sue says: “The highlight of my career has been managing a fantastic team. I couldn’t have done my role without them and my two wonderful deputies, whose support has been second to none.

“There is one patient who has stuck with me over the years, from my time working in Llandough Hospital. We had a young boy who was a regular inpatient and spent a lot of his childhood in and out of hospital. I watched him grow into a lovely young man who is now a paediatric nurse here at the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital.”

Sue is looking forward to spending more time with her granddaughters Molly and Poppy in her retirement. But the love she has towards her young patients isn’t allowing her to completely leave just yet. From April she’ll be returning to her team for two days a week as a play specialist. Sue says she’s looking forward to being back on the wards where she started her career – and to leaving the admin behind!

And as for how else she’ll spend her retirement, Sue has no intention of sitting around! She plans to join a choir, and become a TV extra - so you might see her popping up on your screens before the year is out!

Good luck with your retirement Sue, we’ll miss you!🌈
