Yesterday I received a thank you voice note, and wow. It was one of those moments that reminded me why every hour put in teaching and 1am admin catch up is so very worth it. Those of you who know my story will know why this is such an important moment for me. This is the point. This is why I do this.
A new mum & dad of a 6 week old baby attended Baby & Child First Aid with me a week and a half ago. This lovely mum sent me a voice note, explaining that they were taking their newborn daughter, R, to A&E, and had just had to use the skills they learnt in my class. Their little baby had been poorly and woke up crying, but the crying quickly stopped and turned to significant difficulty breathing. R’s absolute superhero dad recognised the signs of choking and immediately started treatment. This sent big lump of thick mucus flying out of R’s mouth. It had been obstructing her airway, stopping her from breathing.
R’s dad quite possibly saved her life yesterday.
These parents then made the sensible decision to get their little baby checked out at the hospital, but reassured me that she was back to her happy, smiling self as if it had never happened! 💚
Many of you will be aware that this exact scenario happened to my daughter when she was 8 months old. She choked on phlegm. It was terrifying, and watching my baby turn blue was horrific. I saved her life, which is something it took me a while to understand.
First aid training is never going to be something you will regret, but it is something that you may end up forever grateful for. I know I am! 🚑 👶🏻
