The Rise of GLP-1 Drugs and What They Mean for the Future of Weight Loss and Diabetes:
💉GLP-1 receptor agonists like Ozempic (semaglutide), Wegovy, Mounjaro were originally developed to help manage type 2 diabetes. These medications are now making headlines for their effectiveness in promoting significant weight loss.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a hormone that targets areas of the brain involved in appetite regulation, slow emptying of the stomach and increase insulin secretion.
Celebrities and social media have contributed to soaring interest, leading to shortages and ethical questions about off-label use.
Medical benefits beyond weight loss haven't been studied over a long time frame in non-diabetic people, so there are still many unknowns.
Risks and side effects include nausea, vomiting, constipation, pancreatitis or thyroid tumors. Many tablets are not normally absorbed if you take weight loss injections, so be aware that your contraceptive pill or medications for your illnesses may not work as well. You should use condoms to avoid pregnancy if you are taking a contraceptive pill.
GLP-1 aren’t magic bullets. Combining them with nutrition, physical activity, and behavioral support remains key for sustainable health improvements. As research continues, more information about the safety of these medications in non-diabetic people will emerge. For now, research studies are in very early days compared to other safe medications we use.
