Had the pleasure of attending a Dramatherapy Wales conference yesterday.

All of it was fab but as I woke this morning the mantra of the fantastic keynote speaker/performer Clown Holly Stoppit.

When you were a naive child you were incompetent in every way and your response was to be curious and playful. So often as adults we labour under the idea that we must be competent at everything and the result is we stop playing, stop taking risks, stop learning and ... stop living.

So perhaps when you find yourself feeling unskilled, incompetent and awkward, try repeating Holly's mantra to yourself.

She did caution two scenarios where it's not appropriate ... driving and brain surgery.

This is great.

My own view is this ...

If you sit ruminating on an issue you're only using one part of your incredible brain to resolve the difficulties you are wrestling with.

However, if you write or draw or sing or speak your pain and suffering and anguish you are engaging many parts of your brain and focusing them on the issue. You are allowing the whole of your brain to process and integrate the topic.

Furthermore, if you share your experience with another you will received feedback which hopefully can facilitate compassion, tenderness, forgiveness and normalisation which can then be integrated from the other to one self.

You don't have to share ... but do consider journalling specially first thing in the morning. It doesn't have to make sense. Just write without direction and be uninhibited. Trust me, it's freeing and you'll discover some unexpected treasure

I often find that the fear of something is actually much worse than the reality. If one can find the courage to move closer to the source of the fear it loses its power over you.
