Today I had the pleasure of teaching our year 1 and 2 TA psychotherapy students all about working with self-harm in the therapy room.

I introduce the 'elephant in the room' as a physical and direct representation of a client that engages in self-harm. I invite the students to notice their phenomenological experience in response to the idea of working with this client group. I ask them to write these reflections on post it notes and put them on the elephant.

This exercise underpins the ethos of my project. To confront the fear that is so often felt in response to a very common topic that is stigmatised and tabood.

In recognising the fear that was held by almost all of the students, we were able to witness, feel, experience and empathically relate in order to move through this defense and work with the underlying causes, origins and factors that contribute to harm.

At the end of the teach, I asked them bring their reflections again. The words turned into those of hope, compassion, love, encouragement and togetherness.

These workshops can be attended online or in person subject to demand and availability.

Workshop 1. TA therapist's workshop, This is specifically for Psychotherapists/ Counsellors in the field of TA, suitable at Trainee or post CTA level. The workshop is designed to deepen your understanding of self-harm with insights and concepts around how to work with it in the therapy room.

Workshop 2. Practitioner workshop. This workshop is aimed at any practitioner working directly with young people. Self-harm is something that everyone working with this demograph needs to be aware of. This will particularly enhance your confidence and practice when it comes to the disclosure and referral process around self-harm. This training is appropriate for category B of the national safeguarding training, learning and development standards.

Workshop 3. Parents workshop. This is specifically aimed at parents/ care givers who are in the depths of the children in their care engaging in self-harm. The workshop is designed with particular care and attention to compassion, empathy and a holding for those experiencing this difficult time. It will be packed with resources available, information about extra support and a chance to educate, deepen understanding and raise awareness around how to support your child.

Today I worked with a fab group of post 16 outreach youth workers at Pembrokeshire youth service.

I delivered a workshop around self-harm awareness and how to work with young people that engage with self-harm.

I delivered a workshop today to a group of amazing trainee Transactional Analysis therapists, this was one of the first activities for the group.

Using Inquiry to access our child archaic beliefs, we named the elephant in the room. SELF-HARM. We explored what came up for us by writing words on post it notes and placing them on the elephant.

By doing this, we became attune to our experiences in response to something very often known as scary and avoidant. Today, we got to meet self-harm.
