Today's the day!

The entrance to our A&E department at The Cumberland Infirmary is on the move.

From this morning, Wednesday 28 January, the entrance will switch back to where it used to be - at the side of the hospital, close to the ambulance bays. The entrance will lead to a new waiting area for A&E.

Since April last year, patients have been accessing A&E via the main atrium to allow building work to take place on a new Urgent Treatment Centre which will open in Spring 2026.

We expect the new entrance and waiting area will be ready to welcome patients mid morning. Volunteers will be on hand to remind people of the change and to help with directions.

Dr Claire Gray, Emergency Medicine Consultant, said: “The new entrance and waiting area marks a milestone in the progression of the new Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) at the Cumberland Infirmary which will open to patients in Spring 2026. The UTC will be an expansion of our urgent and emergency care facilities at CIC and it will improve the way we are able to care for patients. By locating the UTC next to our A&E we will be able to separate out major and minor injuries so the most appropriate care can be provided. Until the UTC opens in Spring, we will continue to redirect patients to the most appropriate service for them if their condition is not an emergency.”

Resident doctors are planning to strike from 7am on Wednesday, for 5 days, until 7am on Monday (22nd December).

Please attend any appointments as normal unless you are told otherwise.

We are working hard to make sure we can keep our patients and staff safe during the strikes, and minimise the impact on services as much as possible.

Repeating this message as seeing again from feeds this morning that some of the practices have issues with staff illness. So just to remind to please be considerate with the other staff, as they’ll be working hard to cover. 🙏

… It’s that time of year again — winter bugs are circulating, and our primary care teams aren’t immune. In December, when services are already at their busiest, even one or two team members being unwell can have a noticeable impact.

Unlike a stage musical, there aren’t understudies ready to step in, so the rest of the team often has to juggle even more to keep things running smoothly.

Most days, they’re working flat-out, doing their best for patients under very pressured circumstances.

Not every practice will be affected, but it’s useful to stay informed. Keep an eye on your practice’s social media and communication channels — they’ll share updates if staffing issues significantly affect services.

Our simple ask: be patient, kind, and understanding. A little kindness goes a long way — especially right now. 💚💙
