*Changes to the way some services are delivered*

As we have previously announced, some changes will come in from the 1st September across some practices in North Cumbria including here at Brampton Medical Practice.

The main changes mean that if you require follow up tests or care as part of your secondary care service (hospitals) this will be delivered by secondary care (hospitals) and not here at the practice.

North Cumbria Integrated Care (NCIC) have set up a number of community hubs to allow for this secondary care workload and patient care to remain within the community as much as possible. A pre bookable service will launch at Brampton Community Hospital from the 1st of September.

*If you need to access services you will be advised by the secondary care team of how to book an appointment. All appointments must be pre booked.

*If you are already receiving care here at the practice you will be provided with full details of how to book appointments via secondary care from the 1st of September. All appointments must be pre booked

Workloads the practice have supported for many years on behalf of secondary care that has become unsustainable for the practice to continue are things such as:

*ECG Testing (on behalf of secondary care) this should be undertaken by the hospital specialist team. If a GP requires an ECG to be carried out as part of a primary care (GP) appointment this will be done at the practice as usual

*Wound Care: Post Operative suture/clip removal and post operative wound dressings

*Phlebotomy (Blood tests) such as pre operative, pre and post chemotherapy or any blood tests required as part of secondary care follow up

The reason the practice is stepping back from this secondary care workload is to allow us to focus more on our core primary care delivery.

Please show patience to our frontline teams both here at the practice and North Cumbria Integrated Care as they support the transition of these services from Primary Care back into Secondary Care.

Many thanks

"I telephoned for an appointment and I was 12th in the queue however there was an option for a ring back which I chose and I was contacted within 15 minutes which saved me waiting on the phone.

I was told to complete an online form which was sent to me in a text message which took a minute to complete and although it stated I would be contacted within 2 days I waited an hour and I was contacted by a healthcare assistant and received an appointment the same day with a GP"

Are you waiting for surgery or treatment?

Did you know - recovering from surgery can be the equivalent of running a half marathon? This is your body’s repair process working. You wouldn’t run a marathon without training for it first, would you?

👏Did you know… our local pharmacists are now able to help with minor infections such as sinusitis, sore throat, shingles, and UTIs.

If you need to see the GP the pharmacist can refer you in as well. If you can, think Pharmacy First.

“Ethel has been a crucial tool in ensuring Dad’s safety…”

That’s what one family member had to say about our Ethel Care pilot - and we’d like to see if it could work for you too.
Ethel is a user-friendly device connecting older adults with friendly, trained carers through video calls. It’s perfect for:

🕒 Medication reminders
🥣 Monitoring meals and hydration
💬 Friendly chats to ease loneliness

Information relating to Total Triage which is a system we run here at Brampton Medical Practice. All requests for a GP appointment are assessed by our GP team, not our reception team. This video was filmed with GPs from practices across North Cumbria all of whom also run the same system at Brampton Medical Practice 😊

**Vaccination Service COVID & Flu**

Will you be offering vaccinations this year?

Yes, we will.

National guidance has been released and the main vaccination programme can commence from the 1st October 2025.

We are just working behind the scenes to set up our rotas with the addition of appointment slots for these vaccinations. Eligible patients will be able to book an appointment for Flu only, COVID only or both vaccinations at the same time.

Care homes & Housebound Patients
Our wonderful care co ordinators and frailty nurses have also mapped out and arranged where they will be heading out too in order to support vaccination delivery in the community including care homes.

Flu Vaccination from 1st September (Pregnant Women & 2-3 Year Olds)

Pregnant women can commence being vaccinated from 1st September 2025. We will be making appointments available and sending out invites as appropriate.

2-3 year olds (by 31 August 25) can also be invited from 1st September and we will send out invitations as appropriate.

Please note: Vaccinations for school aged children will be undertaken by the school Immunisation team as opposed to the Brampton Medical Practice

We will post further information around availability of appointment dates soon.

As a practice team we work incredibly hard to deliver services to our patients, we are therefore deeply saddened to read some of the negative comments levelled at the practice and articles designed to create a negative impression of practice decisions that have been difficult to make, have not been taken overnight and have not been taken without trying to find an adequate resolution.

Our practice GP Partners, Salaried GPs and wider teams are dedicated to working at our rural practice and we are thankful that we are currently able to recruit into posts despite the difficulties staff know they will face working within an very over stretched service. If we cannot retain our teams, we will not be able to deliver services.

The situation in which we find ourselves is not about laying blame at the door of our secondary care colleagues, nor is it a situation that should create blame and unfair criticism towards your local practice.

General practice has supported services that are not part of our funded contracts for many years and as much as we may dearly love to continue delivering unfunded services purely based on being able to deliver closer to home, if its not financially viable and is affecting our core delivery, we have had to make the decision to request that secondary care retain their workload as opposed to it being passed into Primary Care.

Brampton Medical Practice have agreed to deliver services until the end of August, at which point community hubs will take over from the 1st September.

Please remember there is a very dedicated team of people working at your local practice who have, for many years delivered services across a large rural population and continue to do so. This is a much wider issue around funding and support for your local services.

We would encourage patients to follow our page and/or wait for information to be provided via the practice teams about the changing situation to ensure it is correct.

We will not be posting further information around this until we have the factual information to share from our secondary care colleagues at North Cumbria Integrated Care as they are currently planning delivery via community based hubs from 1st September.

Thank you in advance for supporting your local practice and those who work in the wider North Cumbria Healthcare System.

🏠 Home Visits

Question - Why can't I have a home visit, it's my right to have one if I want one?

Answer - As a GP practice we support out in our community at home and we support in our local care homes. We do not however offer home visits where patients can attend the practice.

For example, we regularly have situations where a home visit is requested only to find on arrival the patient has gone out or we are asked to arrange a home visit around hair or lunch appointments.

A housebound patient is one who is:

Unable to leave their home at all, or if they require significant assistance to leave the house due to illness, frailty, surgery, disability, mental ill-health, or nearing the end of life. For these reasons a person who is housebound would be unable to receive their healthcare in a GP practice or Clinic. Each individual request is reviewed in line with safe care of the patient.

We have some patients who are known to our wonderful frailty nurses who have noted on individual medical records to state which of our patients are permanently housebound. There are however other occasions where a patient may be temporarily housebound and the decision to visit lies with the GP.

When our GP goes out on visits, please remember we cover quite a large rural population so accounting for travel time, we could have one GP out of the surgery for most of the day in addition to our frailty nurse workload.

We hope this helps answer the question as to why we do have to implement strict criteria for home visits and cannot offer an on demand service to all patients regardless of ability to leave home.
