Why is hearing crying immediately after a bump to the head often reassuring?

Because it usually means your child is conscious, responsive and breathing normally.

Crying is a natural reaction to pain, shock and fright, and can be a good sign right after a bump.

BUT keep watching them closely afterwards for at least 24 hours. If they display any of the following symptoms take them to A&E or call 999 immediately.

If your baby or child has:
⚠️ Lost consciousness (even briefly)
⚠️ Difficulty staying awake or keeping their eyes open
⚠️ A fit (seizure)
⚠️ Fallen from a height more than 1 metre or 5 stairs
⚠️ Problems with their vision or hearing
⚠️ A black eye without direct injury to the eye
⚠️ Clear fluid coming from their ears or nose
⚠️ Bleeding from their ears or bruising behind their ears
⚠️ Numbness or weakness in part of their body
⚠️ Problems with walking, balance, understanding, speaking or writing
⚠️ Hit their head at speed, such as in a car crash, being hit by a car or bike or a diving accident
⚠️ A head wound with something inside it or a dent to the head
⚠️ Been crying more than usual (especially in babies and young children)
⚠️ Vomited since the injury
⚠️ Had a change in behaviour, like being more irritable, losing interest in things or being easily distracted (especially in children under 5)

Crying can be reassuring in the moment, but it’s what happens next that really matters.

🔹 Chicken pox is doing the rounds again. Here’s how to spot it and the do’s and don’ts when it comes to treating it.

🔹 An itchy, spotty rash is the main symptom of chickenpox. It can be anywhere on the body.

🔹 Chickenpox happens in 3 stages. But new spots can appear while others are becoming blisters or forming a scab.

❶ Stage 1: small spots appear

The spots can:
be anywhere on the body, including inside the mouth and around the ge****ls, which can be painful spread or stay in a small area be red, pink, darker or the same colour as surrounding skin, depending on your skin tone be harder to see on brown and black skin

❷ Stage 2: the spots become blisters

The spots fill with fluid and become blisters. The blisters are very itchy and may burst.

❸ Stage 3: the blisters become scabs

The spots form a scab. Some scabs are flaky while others leak fluid.

Before or after the rash appears, you might also get:
👉 a high temperature
👉 aches and pains, and generally feeling unwell
👉 loss of appetite

🙌 The clocks go forward on Sunday, which means the promise of lighter evenings, warmer weather, sunshine… oh and disrupted sleep!

👍 Here are our top tips for coping with clock changes when you have little ones:

⏰ Over the course of the next few days move your baby’s bedtime earlier by about 10 minutes each day.

⏰ Keep the rooms your little one will be in as dark as possible in the hour or so before bedtime.

⏰ Give your baby as much fresh air and exercise as possible in the days following the clock change – if they’re tired hopefully the extra light at bedtime won’t be too disruptive for them.

⏰ Use calming methods at bedtime like relaxing music, meditations for kids or audiobooks to help them relax.

⏰ Don’t worry! Even if you do nothing in the run up they will naturally adapt to the new timings. You can’t force a child to sleep so you might just have to go with the flow.
