A reminder we sometimes learn too late.

Over the past couple of years at our caravan on the east coast, there was an older gentleman called Paul who stayed across from us.

We were never close friends, but we crossed paths most mornings around 5am walking our dogs along the beach. He had a Spaniel that he absolutely adored. I’d often see him on the veranda wiping the dog’s paws, feeding him, sitting quietly stroking his head.

It always looked peaceful. The sort of life many of us hope to reach one day.

Yesterday we received the devastating news that Paul had sadly taken his own life.

It shocked me more than I expected. Not because I knew him , but because sometimes the people we only know in passing still become part of our lives in small ways.

It made me reflect on something simple.

How often we pass people every day, exchange a quick “morning”, a smile, and assume everything is fine.

The reality is we rarely know what someone is carrying.

Working in the funeral profession, we see loss in many forms. But moments like this are a reminder that compassion and small human moments matter more than we realise.

Sometimes asking “Are you alright?” might matter more than we think.

If this post does anything, I hope it simply encourages all of us to check in on someone today.
