Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland

Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland Hospice at Home provides free care and support to patients and families in the home. This page is managed by the Fundraising Team, Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm.

Hospice at Home is a local charity that provides high quality, specialised care for patients with life-limiting or life-threating illnesses, whilst also supporting their families and carers. The Charity's aim always has been – and always will be – to provide a choice at the end of life and enable a peaceful and dignified death at home. We are there for people at their most vulnerable and give comfort and reassurance when it is most needed. All of our services are free of charge to our patients their family and carers. This would not be possible without the kindness and generosity of the local community who raise funds and generate important awareness of the organisation. The charity receives a grant from the NHS which covers a small percentage of costs, and the rest needs to be raised within our local community.

Statement from Debbie McKenna:
Chief Executive, Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland
Yesterday’s announcement from Health Minister Stephen Kinnock, at the Hospice UK Conference, marks an important moment for palliative and end of life care across the country.
We are especially encouraged by his commitment that there will be “no more postcode lottery” in end of life care — a pledge that speaks directly to the challenges our communities have faced for far too long. As he said, “Access to high-quality, compassionate palliative care and end of life care can make all the difference to patients and their loved ones during the most difficult times.”
The plan to ensure more people can spend their final days at home, rather than in busy hospital wards and inpatient facilities, miles from home and away from familiar surroundings and comforts, is something we strongly welcome. Every day at Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland, we see how much it means to people to be cared for where they feel safe, comfortable, and connected to those they love.
The Government’s new vision for neighbourhood health — where community teams, hospice outreach staff, care homes, and paramedics work closely together and share care plans — has real potential to transform patient experiences and prevent unnecessary admissions to hospital at the end of life.
There is still much work ahead, but today’s announcement gives us genuine reason for optimism. We look forward to working with partners locally and nationally to make this vision a reality for the people of Carlisle and north and east Cumbria.
A future where everyone has real choice and access to properly funded, high-quality end of life care feels one step closer today.
