πŸƒπŸ» πŸ’¨ Day 12 of your DAHM running related tips and tricks!

πŸ’ͺ🏻 todays post lets us know about the quadriceps muscles and the importance of them.

🦡 Especially if you have knee pain this and the next few posts will be you out!!

πŸ™ŒπŸ» The quads as a group of muscles straighten then leg, and can lift the knee up to the front. Whilst we are in contact with the floor the quads isometrically co tract to help absorb the load, prevent the knee from moving any further forward so we can move our body weight towards the toes and push off!!

🀨 Because of this load, the knee can often be a common area for pain and injury in the running community. So follow on for the next few post for a run down of knee injuries!

As always, tag those who would benefit from hearing about these, comment for some advice and share away!

πŸƒπŸ» πŸ’¨ welcome to Day 11 of your DAHM running tips!!

πŸ’ͺ🏻 This video gives you some ideas to strengthen your hamstrings if you can’t meet the minimum requirements in your at home testing (see previous video!!)

🧐 I find these videos particularly hard as there are so many exercises to choose from, and I don’t really give so many hamstring exercises out to rehab a hamstring issue! That might sound silly, but the hamstring is just one group of muscles working in conjunction with many others. HOWEVER, this video is purely to give you ideas to challenge the hamstrings in some isolation.

πŸ”₯ Have a go and see how you get on.

πŸƒπŸ» πŸ’¨ Day 10 of your DAHM running related tips!!

πŸ’ͺ🏻 Today is the reintroduction to the hamstrings.
βœ… We know that the hamstring can be responsible for absorbing / producing up to 4x your body weight during running, so they must be strong and durable πŸ’ͺπŸ»β€¦..

BUT……..how do we know if yours are capable enough or not? πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

Watch until the end to find out how to test your own hamstring capacity ⏱️

🀨 No cheating!!!! They have to be clean reps, bum touches the floor (but no resting there) and up to form a straight line between knee, hip and shoulder. See how your left leg compares to your right…..

Let me know how you do in the comments….

Day 9 of your DAHM running πŸƒπŸ» πŸ’¨ related (or not so running related today!!) tips and tricks!!

Your calves can provide a β€˜vascular shunt’ encouraging an efficient return of blood back to the heart πŸ’“. Hence the nickname β€˜our second heart’.

So not only do they absorb and produce lots of force while running, they also play a supportive role in the cardiovascular system.

So even more reason to get them working πŸ’ͺ🏻

πŸƒπŸ» πŸ’¨ Day 9 of your DAHM running tips and tricks!!!

πŸ’ͺ🏻 So we know the forces that the calves must tolerate while running, we now have a test to see how strong / durable they should be.

AND here we now have some exercise choices that would help develop some strength, strength endurance, connection with the rest of the posterior chain AND some early plyos for rhythm and coordination which is essential for running!

- simple bent knee single leg calf raise (but load this up as much as possible)
- single leg elevated wall push: working on developing a triple flexion to triple extension pattern to engage running related muscles
- overcoming single leg isometric push. Aim to build intensity over time up to maximal efforts and holds for 10-40 seconds
- foam roller tingle leg glute bridge: bum only slightly off the floor, toes down into the foam roller and heel high. This will help co-contraction which is essential for running economy
- plyometrics - start easy like the videos but running (explosive runners in particular) should be encouraged to really push this component of training

Save these exercises, have a go and let me know how you find them βœ…

Day 8 of the DAHM Running tips πŸƒπŸ» πŸ’¨

We have established that the calves need to tolerate up to 12x your body weight on contact 🀯 which is pretty impressive!!!

But how do we know if we are strong or capable of tolerating these loads?

A nice simple test for now is an elevated single leg calf raises (IN FULL) aiming for more then 20 reps. πŸ’ͺ🏻
The test stops when you cannot continue or your reps become sloppy (not getting from top to bottom).

Have a go and let us know how you get on!
Happy calf raises!!!

Day 7: Does your choice of running shoe impact on the risks of injury?

It’s a subject that allows lots of opinions to enter the chat because we have all had that one pair of running shoes that either gave us our PB, or we just couldn’t get away with wearing, therefore took all the blame for our poor run!!

Another video to follow later today about the foot which should also support this video, but it’s a subject that really interests me, because it evolves a lot and the research is developing really quickly with huge investments from brands such as nike and adidas etc

Day 6 for all you lucky runners!!!

What are the risk factors associated to running?

These are not exhaustive but offer you an insight into what might be contributing to your injuries, aches or pains!!

Let me know if any of these resonate with you?
