Mother’s experiences of access to International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) support in the UK

We are conducting research to understand who accesses IBCLC support in the UK and what facilitates this access. You do not need to have breastfed, and you do not need to have received support from an IBCLC to take part.

The research has been approved by the Health and Social Care Research Ethics Committee (approval number 2 2025 13501 13457).

Our research aims to understand mothers’ experiences of accessing IBCLC support in the UK, whether they chose to or were able to access IBCLC support or not.

We understand that talking about infant feeding experiences can be upsetting if things didn’t go to plan. Please contact the Birth Trauma Association or any of the breastfeeding support associations in the UK if this is upsetting for you.

As part of this we are looking for mothers to complete a survey that will take between 20 – 30 minutes depending on how much you would like to say. Our survey will remain open for the next 4 weeks from 24th July to 21st August 2025.

We would like to hear from parents who:

• Are based in the UK
• Had a baby between May 2021 and May 2025
• Breastfed, formula fed, combination fed or anything in between

We would like to hear from mothers and parents no matter how they fed their baby, and whether they received IBCLC support or not.

Does it really matter which chart we use to plot baby’s weight?
Yes. And here’s a real example why.

In this case, a baby boy was being tracked using the girl's chart. Everything looked fine — but when we plotted him on the correct boy chart, it showed he’d dropped off the chart and met faltering growth criteria.

⚠️ Same baby. Same weights. Very different interpretation.

If your baby’s chart doesn’t feel right, or you’ve been told “it doesn’t matter” — it’s worth checking again. Mistakes like this can delay support.

Lactose free milk is not a treatment for cows milk protein allergy and excluding cows milk from your diet will not irradicate lactose form your breastmilk.

Lactose is a carbohydrate and cows milk protein is of course a protein. They are different substances. Lactose intolerance in babies is rare. The most common cause is gastrointestinal infection (tummy bugs) which temporarily damages the gut lining and causes reduced production of lactase, the enzyme which digests lactose. The lactose intolerance in these cases is temporary and gradually resolves within a couple of months of infection. Premature babies may also have temporary lactase deficient which gets better as they get a bit older. A few babies may be born with a congenital lactase deficiency but this is extremely rare and makes these babies very unwell within a few days of birth. These babies have to stop breastfeeding and go on to lactose free formula as you cannot remove lactose from breastmilk via dietary changes.

The symptoms of lactose intolerance and cows milk protein allergy are often confused by healthcare professionals as well as parents so please seek specialist advice if you are worried your baby is reacting to something in the milk you are giving to them.
