We can all be deeply impacted by hearing about traumatic events, even if we’re not directly affected.

In the wake of shocking news, such as a tragic incident or natural disaster, many of us feel overwhelmed by the emotional weight of what we see and hear – particularly in a world of 24-hour news streaming and instant updates.

In our latest blog, we've shared with you some tips for looking after yourself when the news feels overwhelming.

This is a really good resource. Some people don't realise that they are in an abusive relationship until someone else points out that their partner's behaviour is not ok. This poster helps by naming some of the behaviours that can happen in an emotionally abusive relationship. Sometimes we just need to see it in black and white.

🌟Emotional Abuse🌟

Emotional abuse can feel as destructive and damaging as physical abuse, and can severely impact your mental health. The scars of emotional abuse are real and long-lasting.

It’s often used as a way to maintain power and control over someone.
Emotional abuse may be accompanied by other kinds of abuse. (see attached poster created by CAMHS)
Physical violence is often seen as being more serious than emotional abuse, but this simply isn’t true.

As well as having a negative impact on your self-esteem and confidence, emotional abuse can leave you feeling depressed, anxious or even suicidal.

The first step in escaping an abusive situation is realising that you're not alone and it's not your fault.
If you decide to leave be careful who you tell. It's important your partner does not know where you're going.
Before you go, try to get advice from an organisation that can give you information and support about making a safety plan.

There are some good ideas on this poster for making changes when you are experiencing depression. Although it can feel like you have no energy or motivation, just changing one small thing can be beneficial to raise mood and change thought patterns.

Celebrate the wins, if all you have managed to do today is get out of bed or have a shower or brush your teeth or get dressed, that's a win.

🌟TIPS FOR COPING WITH DEPRESSION🌟

💜Loving this poster from CAMHS – please have a look and try some of the suggestions.

Depression is a common medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Depression symptoms can vary from mild to severe but fortunately, it is also treatable.
Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed. Sadly it can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease your ability to function at work and at home.
What’s really important is that you get help if you're still feeling down or depressed after a couple of weeks. Do not try to hide away from how you are feeling.

🔹If you start to feel that your life isn't worth living or about harming yourself, get help straight away. Call 999 / 111 (option 2), reach out to a loved one or go to your local A&E – REACH OUT.💜

What is pre-eclampsia?

Pre-eclampsia is a condition that affects between 1 and 5 in 100 pregnant women and birthing people in the UK. It can cause high blood pressure as well as lead to complications like premature birth, liver or kidney failure. The only way to 'cure' it is to deliver the baby and placenta.

Symptoms of pre-eclampsia include a headache that doesn't go away with painkillers, vision problems like blurring or flashing, swelling of your hands, feet or face, and persistent heartburn.

If you notice any of these symptoms during pregnancy, it's important to speak to your midwife or GP.

How can schools support staff affected by pregnancy loss?

It can be difficult to know how to best support a member of staff who has been affected by pregnancy loss. Our new article from the Miscarriage Association offers some guidance on how to ensure you’re providing the support they need.
