Would you and your family know what to do if an emergency were to happen in your home?

Here are some basic tips to put into place, for extra peace of mind:

❗ Pinpoint a safe meeting area or two in the property, being a priority meeting spot and an alternative. Think as close to the ground as possible

❗ Decide on an external meeting place, being the destination in the event of a fire

❗ Do your children know how to call 999? Talk them through the process just in case the situation arises when it’s needed

❗ Check your batteries still work in equipment such as smoke detectors

❗ Ensure alarm systems are working

Depending on the size of your workforce, this will either include a physical handbook, or a policy in place for managing health and safety.

Five or more employees? Then you must have a written document.

Less than five employees? It isn’t necessary to have a written document but would be useful to do so.

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations details the requirements you must have to manage health and safety.

Darker days and less daylight hours can all cause increased hazardous working conditions.

Falls are more likely. Extra care will be needed.

A few tips to help keep safe during these winter months:

🥶 Freezing temperatures can lead to ice and black ice. Take extra care when taking steps, especially if the area isn’t familiar to you

💧 Wet leaves can be slippery. Avoid piles of leaves and mulch

💡 Walk in well lit-up areas, and don’t be afraid to let your employer know if the lighting isn’t adequate

🚫 Don’t walk with your hands in your pocket. Should you stumble, you are more likely going to be able to save yourself with your hands-free

👢 Wear sensible clothing for the weather! Wearing skins / thermal clothing is a great way of layering up

🦺 High – vis clothing is a must when working on the roads, railways and so on
