I don’t usually post things like this from a place of anger, but honestly right now I am angry.
What we’re learning very quickly is that healthcare can become a complete postcode lottery when your child is medically complex.
Liwsi urgently needs an MRI under general anaesthetic due to the rapid regression she’s experiencing. But because we live in Carmarthenshire, our local hospital doesn’t have the specialist team needed to safely anaesthetise children like Liwsi. That means we rely on specialist hospitals further away.
The waiting list in our nearest specialist hospital is currently around 18 months.
18 months.
For a child who is actively regressing now. Losing skills now. Changing week by week without answers.
Thankfully, her consultants agree this needs escalating and are now pushing Cardiff to get this done urgently, and we are incredibly grateful for the professionals fighting in Liwsi’s corner. We are hugely appreciative of our NHS and the individual staff who have cared for Liwsi with compassion, kindness and genuine concern throughout all of this.
But this still cuts incredibly deep when you are physically watching your child regress in front of you whilst knowing the tests she urgently needs are so difficult to access simply because of where you live.
No parent should have to sit in limbo feeling helpless whilst their child deteriorates without answers.
This isn’t about blame. It’s about a healthcare system stretched so thin that families are left terrified, exhausted and fighting for urgent care depending on their postcode.
Right now we just want answers for our little girl. 🩷
