6 Counselling Sessions for the Cost of 5 to help alleviate YOUR January Stress

January can seem like a month of darkness, post-Christmas fatigue, lots of anxiety-provoking news and maybe tax returns to fill in...no wonder you are stressed...

Every day, I meet people who don’t see themselves as heroes - yet they show extraordinary courage simply by getting through another day.

Choosing to seek support, to talk, to heal, is one of the bravest things a person can do.

For over 12 years, I’ve had the privilege of supporting children, teenagers, adults, couples and families to improve their mental wellbeing.

At Counselling Minds, I believe it’s vital that we recognise people not just for what they achieve, but for what they endure. Everyday heroes are all around us — often quietly facing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, burnout, relationship challenges, loss, PTSD, addictions, life-changing illness or LGBTQ+ issues.

If you’re struggling, you don’t have to do it alone. I offer a no-obligation, confidential chat to explore how counselling could help you.
Located just off Junction 35 of the M6, near Carnforth, with easy access for Lancaster, Morecambe, Carnforth, Heysham, Milnthorpe, Burton in Kendal, Kirkby Lonsdale, Silverdale, Arnside and Kendal.

Online and telephone counselling also available across the UK.

Sometimes the most heroic step is simply reaching out.

Blue Monday : Getting Through It

The third Monday in January is often labelled the “most difficult day of the year.”

However, as we know, it doesn't have to be.

The term Blue Monday was coined years ago to describe a mix of post-Christmas fatigue, cold dark days, financial pressures, and the sense that spring still feels a long way off. While the idea itself isn’t scientific, the feelings many people experience at this time of year are very real.

If today feels heavy, you’re not alone. One of the most important things we can do is stay connected; physically or electronically. Spending time with friends, reaching out for a chat, or simply not isolating yourself can make a real difference. Human connection matters, especially when motivation is low.

If you are struggling though, then taking time to re-connect with yourself may be the best thing to do for you, to allow you to regain your energy and then to resurface when you're ready.

Time connecting with nature can be nourishing - grounding yourself. Having some time in natural light provides you with much needed vitamin D.

It’s also helpful to keep this time of year in perspective. January can feel endless, but it will pass. Lighter mornings, warmer days, and renewed energy are ahead, even if it doesn’t feel like it right now.

Obviously I am going to say that counselling can also help because I have seen the transformational effects that being able to talk about feelings can make to people's mental wellbeing. Often people come to therapy not knowing exactly what’s wrong - just that something doesn’t feel right. Counselling provides a space to slow down, reflect, and find words for how you’re feeling, which in itself can be incredibly relieving.

Be kind to yourself today. You don’t have to push through alone.

As a child, my Mum became very ill and I experienced the effects that poor mental health can have on people and those around them. This period in my life, instilled a passion that I still have, to improve people's mental health. Winter can feel like such a long season at times. The shorter days, darker mornings and evenings can really test our energy and mood. But before we know it, spring will be on its way – and with it, a sense of lightness, renewal and optimism 🌱

Until then, it’s so important that we look after ourselves mentally. Counselling can be a huge support during the winter months, but there are also simple things we can do for ourselves day to day. Getting outside for daylight whenever we can (even briefly), considering a Vitamin D supplement, or using a SAD lamp can all help our brains believe, to some extent, that sunlight is still present in our lives.

In many ways, we’re not so different from our cave-dwelling predecessors. They, too, endured long winters and celebrated the arrival of spring, instinctively recognising how vital light and warmth were for wellbeing. That connection is still very much part of us.

Be kind to yourself this winter. Brighter days really are ahead.
