💛 I have a NEW JOB!! 💛

I haven’t had the chance to stop and take stock recently. My big news is that I have a new job that I started in September.

I officially work in Well-being 5 days a week now! 😍🥰

I am a Youth Well-being Mentor Mon. - Thu. And on Fridays I run a Well-being provision for a local High School.

I’ve had moments where I honestly can’t believe this has happened! I get to do what I love most full time now!

I can eat, sleep and repeat Well-being all day everyday! 🥰🤣

Two years ago my own well-being and mental health was at its lowest point.

I had left Primary School Teaching with no clue where to go to next.

I became a Nanny and young persons carer. That rolled into parental coaching, ALN support and becoming a well-being support mentor for a young person. Then I ran a well-being provision for a year working with young people aged 11 - 16.

I started and finished my level 2 counselling. Enrolled into level 3 and level 2 principles in Youth work! 😅😅

And here I am today. Working full time in well-being studying at the same time.

Life has a funny way of working it’s self out. With out my lowest points I wouldn’t enjoy the sweet moments quiet so much.

Working through my own mental health issues has helped me to become better at helping others. ❤️

And that’s where I’m at. 🥰

Today I am training to be a drawing and talking practitioner. 💛☺️

Drawing & Talking Therapy is a 12 week course that helps children and adults process painful experiences.

It will not fix the person but it will help them to process these painful thoughts, emotions and experiences.

Life is about learning how to survive and how to continue living after experiencing pain and loss.

I cannot wait to finish this training and start practising.

Happy New Year!

As one parent to another here are some things I try to gift my children and all the children and teens that I work with.

1. Freedom - Freedom to explore, engage, talk and be curious. 💛

2. Trust - when they ask to do something, give them the trust to try it independently first.

3. Space - space to make choices, space to develop trust, space to be alone, space to explore. Space to talk and share their emotions.

4. Emotional presence - being emotionally available is far more valuable than always being there.

5. Time - make time for moments where you can interact together alone. It creates a safe space and allows them to feel valued.

Finally…

6.Boundaries - This is probably the most important one! Communicate them in simple language or use pictures. appchild or
Boundaries can reduce anxiety and promotes an environment that feels “safe.”

Feeling safe helps you to learn more, explore more and then go on to grow and thrive.
💛💛💛💛

These gifts can’t be bought or sold. They do not give instant gratification and they take time and energy.

I’ve been busy working on social stories which help children who have anxiety about returning to school.

Returning to school can be a very worrying time for children.

And if you have a child who suffers with anxiety it can cause lots of emotional outbursts and behavioural problems.

My stories are personalised for each child and also include practical methods that can be used to help your child to feel calm and self regulate.

If this is something that you think might benefit your child please feel free to get in touch.

💛💛💛

Let’s make the transition into the new school year a smooth and calm one. ☺️

💗I just love Pink, Blue and You by Elise Gravel with Mykaell Blair’s. 💗

So here it what it covers…

💜Assumptions about gender stereotypes
❤️Things people typically say to boys and girls.
🧡 Who made up these rules and are they fair?
💛What s*x we are born, male, female or Inters*x.
💚What is gender identity?
💙Pronouns
🤍Different types of families

With the underlying message that everyone deserves to be loved, protected and respected.

It is great for children from the age of 7 and up! 👍🏻👍🏻

I got given these beautiful flowers today by a lovely family that I have been working with for nearly a year.

When I met the family I had awful anxiety that I was working so hard to overcome. I absolutely had anxiety disorder!

I met this beautiful mother and her family. She too had anxiety and was really struggling to work through it with a new baby and an 18month old.

I could relate on so many levels.

I had been that mama that was overwhelmed, anxious, exhausted and lonely.

Covid had only isolated mothers even more. I remembered that feeling of isolation after having a new baby and I didn’t have my children during a pandemic!

So I started helping with bedtimes, then little outings out and about with the children. Leaving the house with two small children is hard wok. 😅
It became a regular couple of hours a week to help give mum a break and eventually it was a full day as mum returned back to work from MAT leave.

Thursdays became my favourite day of the week. I got to have baby cuddles and help a fellow mama out. 🥰

We would talk about our anxiety. Share our ups and downs. Talk about our children and bounce ideas back and forth.

The kindness they showed me helped me to heal and regain my inner confidence.

And I got the honour of watching a little person grow and their mama flourish too. 🥰

Life is not always about the huge achievements, the job promotions and new stuff.

It’s also about the connections we make with others. How those connections helps us to grow as people and how it makes us feel.

I’ve only got a few short weeks left with this family and they won’t need me any more. But I know I’ve made a connection for life. ❤️ And I am eternally grateful.

Next year is going to look a little different. My time Nannying has been an incredible journey and I’m telling my anxiety to calm down because I’m ready for the next adventure.

Do you have dyslexia or know someone who has dyslexia?

Friday’s I tutor during school hours because interventions should be in school hours and not an extra thing to do at the end of the day.

I could see the child I was tutoring was lacking in confidence with his reading today.

He had told his mother he is the worst reader in his class. 😢

Dyslexia make learning to read more difficult. Most children in school are climbing a hill everyday a dyslexic child is climbing a mountain! A huge mountain everyday!

They may come home more tired and irritable because their brains have had to work harder.

So what can you do to help?

❤️Celebrate how dyslexia makes you different

🧡Read little and often

💛Choose books they want to read

💚Praise effort not achievement
(Not so easy to do in todays society.)

💙Make positive associations with reading

A dyslexic child will still learn to read and go on to be successful reader! Their rate of progress will just look different to their peers.

If you would like more information, support or would like to enquire about tutoring - get in touch! 💛👍🏻😘

My next read.
Which I am very excited to start.

When I started my trauma informed training I wanted to know more. I wanted far more depth and information than the courses I was attending provided. So I got reading:-

💙 THE BODY KEEPS THE SCORE by Bessel Van Dee Kolk - I was recommended this book while in therapy myself. This is the answer to improving physical health by first addressing mental health. Powerful and practical.

💙 THE DEEPEST WELL by Dr Nadine Burke Harris - Her groundbreaking research coined the term ACEs - Adverse Childhood Experiences. Was your childhood “normal” or did you in fact suffer abuse?

I’m very excited to start my next read which was recommend on a course by

💙 THE BOY WHO WAS RAISED AS A DOG by Bruce D.Perry, MD, PHD and Maia Szalavitz.

The more I read and learn the more I want to learn. Supporting children through mental health issues is personal for me. I feel passionately about helping children and for the first time in a long time I’m excited about the potential of my future career.

Yes I have been impacted by trauma and I want to take that energy and use it for good. ❤️

Children’s books I highly recommend all about death.

💛 When someone very special dies is a workbook for children aged between 5 to 14. As you read the book children draw their own pictures and illustrations to journal their grief.

✨It breaks down talking about death into manageable parts and you can work through it at your own pace.

🧡 Fox is all about the circle of life as you follow a fox to its final resting place. It covers the practical aspects of death and how there is a cycle to life. At the end all of Fox’s friends share their memories of him to celebrate his life.

✨ It is a good introduction to the concept of dying and would be appropriate to use for any age. You could use this for the death of a pet or when your child begins to understand the concept of death.

💙 Ta-Cu’s bobble hat is a very gentle story about losing a grandparent. The art work is incredible and features the beautiful Welsh valleys.

✨This is a sensitive book that covers loss and love of a beloved grandparent. Suitable for any age and great conversation starter.

I hope these books help and if you discover more please do share!

Having these uncomfortable conversations is important. Death affects us all including children.

Life is precious so let’s celebrate it and keep the memories of those we have lost alive. 🌟

This is one of my favourite children’s books all about feelings.

By Emma Brownjohn

It is a great tool for starting emotional literacy.

Putting a name to a feeling can be powerful and it helps children to identify what is is they are feeling and how it affects their body.

This is the first step to emotional literacy. The book also has a spinning feelings game at the end.
