Today I watched Mesha 'Mr Colitis Crohns' on This Morning openly talking about life with an ileostomy stoma, even doing a bag change live on TV and I honestly applaud him for helping bring awareness, education, and understanding to something that so many people still feel uncomfortable talking about.
Living with a stoma can come with many myths, misunderstandings, and challenges, and I think conversations like this are incredibly important for raising awareness around hidden disabilities too. As many of you already know, I have a colostomy which is on the opposite side to Mesha's. Due to surgery ultimately helped save my life from stage 3 bowel cancer. I’ve now lived with my “bag” for 10 years, and I’ve never been embarrassed to talk about it. Sure some of you have heard the involuntary noises from it too 😆.
I also have close friends with ileostomies. It’s something that fascinates me, and I think the more openly we talk, the more we help break down stigma. Mesha also has an amazing page which I’ve followed for years since getting my own stoma, and I think the awareness he brings is fantastic.
So if you ever have questions, are worried about your own journey, or simply want to understand more, I’m always happy to chat, whether that’s privately or while you’re in the salon. No embarrassment here 💚.
