How often do you check your children’s feet?

👣 Check shoe size every 6-8 weeks for toddlers and every 3 months for older children.
👣 Ensure shoes have room for toes (around 1cm) and hold the heel securely to prevent sliding. Avoid hand-me-downs as they mould to the previous owner's feet.
👣 Look for red marks, skin irritation, blisters, corns, or hard skin.
👣 Wash feet daily and dry thoroughly, especially between the toes to prevent fungal infections.
👣 Check toenails - make sure they are cut straight across
👣 Encourage walking barefoot indoors to strengthen muscles, but keep shoes on for protection outside.

Your feet are miracles of engineering. Each one has 26 bones, 33 joints, 107 ligaments, and 19 muscles and tendons. They were designed to grip, sense, and adapt to uneven ground.

Then we put them in cushioned shoes for most of our lives. Their muscles weaken. Their sensory function fades. Their joints stiffen.

A study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that minimalist and barefoot training significantly increased foot strength, improved balance, and reduced fall risk in older adults.

Your feet are your foundation. Weak feet translate up the chain to ankle instability, knee pain, hip dysfunction, and back problems. Strong feet protect everything above them.

In my practice, I encourage patients to spend time barefoot every day. Walk around your house without shoes. Stand on grass in the morning. Do simple foot exercises: curl your toes, spread them wide, pick up small objects with your toes.

If you want to start barefoot walking outdoors, begin on soft surfaces like grass or sand. Your feet will be sore at first because they're working muscles they haven't used in years.

Don't abandon shoes entirely. When you need them for protection or support, wear them. But build regular barefoot time into your days.

Your feet have been asleep for decades. It's time to wake them up.

When's the last time you walked barefoot in grass?
