The soaring cost of common blood clot medicine is “financially crippling” local pharmacies in Northern Ireland, according to body representing high street pharmacists.

The Pharmacy First Service allows women aged 16-64, registered with a GP in Northern Ireland to use the pharmacy as their first port of call for the management of Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) without the need to contact their GP.

Symptoms may include suddenly needing to pass urine or passing urine more often than normal, burning or cloudy urine.

The pharmacist can advise and supply medication as necessary or refer patients to their GP according to their needs.

Women with symptoms seeking advice or treatment can contact the pharmacy in person or by phone. The pharmacist will discuss symptoms and medical history and may ask for a urine sample to be brought to the pharmacy. If appropriate the pharmacist can provide antibiotics to treat the infection.

The consultation may take place by phone, or in person in the pharmacy.
