About Feet

About Feet Charmaine Barnes, BSc. Pod. Med., M. Ch. S., S. R. Ch, is an HPC Registered Podiatrist/Chiropodist with over 30 years experience.

Her speciality is taking a proactive approach to foot health. It is possible to book appointments in surgery or by contacting us on Facebook or by telephoning 02893360049. About Feet offers the possibility to book both evening appointments and home visits (upon request), as well as appointments to visit nursing homes. When treating clients at home or in a nursing home, our aim is to improve comfor

t and independence without compromise. About Feet has a compact but adequate set-up to ensure clients are treated with the same quality of care they would get in a private consultation room. To prevent cross-infection and safe transportation between locations, all instruments are individually packed and sterilised in separate, single-use bags so that only sterilised instruments are used for each client. About Feet treats a range of foot and lower limb conditions, with their priority being to change the way people think about their feet. They aim to minimise ongoing problems and provide customers with optimal foot health, which they believe leads to improved overall health and well-being. About Feet also offers nail surgery; nail reconstruction; biomechanical assessment; orthoses; and podiatric acupuncture in addition to standard routine foot care. The clinic is located on the ground floor, with off-street parking being available. It is beside Carrickfergus train and bus station and is a short walk from the centre of Carrickfergus and its associated amenities.

A lot of people aren’t quite sure what podiatry involves.

Most of what we do is simple, practical care that helps people stay comfortable and mobile.

On a typical day, we help with:
• nail care that has become difficult to manage
• removing hard skin and relieving pressure
• treating corns that make walking sore
• managing nails that are causing discomfort in shoes
• general foot problems that affect day-to-day comfort

These are very common issues, and nothing to feel embarrassed about.

Often, people leave saying they wish they had come sooner.

If something has been bothering you, or you’re finding it harder to manage your feet, we’re here to help.

It’s rarely one big problem. It’s usually small things building up.

A bit of hard skin here.
A nail that’s slightly uncomfortable.
A pressure point that comes and goes.

On their own, these things don’t always feel urgent. But over time, they can start to affect how you walk, how steady you feel, and how comfortable everyday life becomes.

That’s what we see most often in clinic. Not emergencies, just small issues that have gradually become more noticeable.

Podiatry is about addressing those problems early, before they start to limit you.

If your feet don’t feel quite as comfortable as they used to, it’s always worth getting them checked.

Ingrown toenails are one of the most common problems we see in clinic.

They happen when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin, which can cause redness, swelling, and pain. In some cases, it can become infected if left untreated.

There are a few common reasons this develops.

1) Cutting nails too short or rounding the edges can encourage the nail to grow into the skin rather than straight across.
2) Tight footwear can also put pressure on the toes, especially if nails are already sensitive. For some people, the natural shape of the nail or toe makes them more prone to it.

The good news is that there are simple ways to reduce the risk.

- Try to cut nails straight across rather than down the sides.
- Avoid cutting them too short, even if they feel uncomfortable.
- Make sure footwear has enough room in the toe area and doesn’t press on the nails. - If nails are becoming thick, curved, or difficult to manage, it’s best not to struggle with them.

If an ingrown toenail is already sore, it’s important not to dig at it or try to fix it yourself, as this can make it worse.

In most cases, ingrown toenails can be treated quickly and safely when seen early.

If you’re experiencing discomfort, or you’re unsure how to manage your nails properly, we’re always here to help.

It’s something we’re often contacted about.

A parent, partner, or relative who is finding it harder to cut their nails safely. Sometimes due to mobility, sometimes because nails have become thicker, and sometimes simply because it’s no longer comfortable to reach their feet.

It’s not always something they’ll mention themselves, but it can start to affect how they walk, how their shoes feel, and their overall comfort day to day.

We provide gentle, professional nail care both in our clinic and through home visits across Carrickfergus and surrounding areas.

This means your loved one can receive proper foot care in a way that feels safe, respectful, and comfortable for them.

Regular nail care can help prevent:
• discomfort when walking
• nails catching or breaking
• pressure in footwear
• ingrown toenails developing

If you’ve been thinking about getting help for someone, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common reasons people reach out to us.

It’s been really lovely being back in the clinic these past few days and seeing so many familiar faces again.

One of the things I’m always reminded of after a break is just how many people quietly put up with discomfort for longer than they need to. Little things that don’t seem urgent, but slowly start to affect how comfortable walking feels.

Whether it’s nails becoming harder to manage, skin building up, or just feet not feeling quite right anymore, these are things I see every day and can usually help with more easily than people expect.

It’s never about judging how long something has been there. 𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧.

If something has been on your mind, you’re always very welcome to get in touch.

A walk around Carrickfergus Castle is something many people take for granted.

It’s flat, familiar, and easy to access.

Until it isn’t.

We often see people who have slowly reduced how much they walk, not because they want to, but because their feet have become uncomfortable.

Corns, hard skin, nails, or pressure can all make simple walks feel harder than they should.

If something is starting to limit you, we’re here to help.

We're back again next week.

If you run regularly, 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 than you think.

With every step, your feet absorb impact, adjust to the ground, and keep you balanced. Over time, small issues can start to build up without you noticing.

We often see runners with:
• thickened or bruised toenails
• pressure causing hard skin
• corns forming from friction
• soreness across the forefoot
• early ingrown nails

These problems don’t always stop you running straight away, but they can affect comfort, performance, and recovery.

Looking after your feet is just as important as your shoes or your training plan.

If something doesn’t feel quite right, it’s always worth having it checked early.

Hi all!

Many common foot issues develop gradually, often without much notice, until they start to become uncomfortable.

We regularly treat things like:

👉 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐧
Often caused by pressure or friction from footwear or the way the foot moves. Over time, this can become painful when walking.

👉 𝐈𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐭𝐨𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐬
These can develop from how nails are cut, pressure from shoes, or changes in the nail itself.

👉 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐧𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐬
Nails can thicken with age, pressure, or trauma, making them difficult to cut and uncomfortable in shoes.

👉 𝐂𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐬
Dry skin combined with pressure can lead to splitting, especially after months in enclosed footwear.

👉 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐭 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐞
Often linked to increased activity, footwear, or changes in how the foot is bearing weight.

In most cases, these problems can be treated simply and effectively. We gently remove hard skin, relieve pressure, manage nails safely, and offer advice to help prevent the issue returning.

If something is starting to feel uncomfortable, it’s usually much easier to manage sooner rather than later.

“Back from London… and back on our feet 👣”

After a lovely few days away in London, it’s been nice to get back home and into routine again. Thank you for your kind messages of congratulations.

Trips like that are always a reminder of just how much we rely on our feet. Long days, lots of walking, different surfaces, and by the end of it you really start to notice any little aches or discomfort.

It’s often the same here at home in Carrickfergus. Whether it’s a walk along the seafront, a trip into town, or just day-to-day life, small foot problems can start to make things less comfortable than they should be.

We regularly help with:
• sore or ingrown toenails
• corns and hard skin
• aching feet when walking
• thickened nails causing pressure
• general foot discomfort

If your feet are starting to limit how far or how comfortably you walk, it may be time to have them looked at.
