Spotlight on Mary C resident at Barlochan House.

Mary has lived with us for about a year and a half. Mary was born in Ashgill in Lanarkshire 99 years ago. She loved skipping and playing hopscotch with her cousin who is a year older and they still keep in touch. Mary lost her mum at a young age and went to live with her Aunt until she met and married John C.
Mary met John during wartime, he was an engineer and Mary worked in the office of the company he worked for. They married in 1948 and went on to have 3 boys Tom, Ian and Russell. When John got a job with the Electricity Board they moved to Tongland and moved into the house beside the power station. Mary stayed home to look after the children and also a neighbours child called Gayle and grew very fond of Gayle.
Mary's hobbies included knitting, sewing and the church guild. Mary had a knitting machine and often made the boys school jumpers and jumpers for her husband. Mary took dressmaking classes and often made blouses and repaired the family's clothes.
Mary baked every Thursday and her in-laws would come around every Wednesday and Sunday when they would all go to church together and then back to the house for Sunday lunch for all. The boys always wore kilts on a Sunday.
As they got older Mary and John enjoyed holidays together and enjoyed their grandchildren too. Mary's Great Grandaughter Millie graduated with a Masters Degree in Aerospace systems and she is very proud of her.
After John became unwell with cancer she nursed him at home until he passed away. Mary found John's death difficult as they had been together so long.
After she was no longer able to manage at home she came here to stay at Barlochan House.

Spotlight on our Senior Carer Sharon Parker.

How long have you been at Barlochan House?
26 years in total.

What is your favourite part of your job?
I take great pleasure in making sure the comfort and needs of all our residents are taken care of.

What is your favourite time of the year?
Christmas is so special and to spend it here with our residents and colleagues is just magical. The home is decorated beautifully, the entertainment is festive and the food is second to none.

What are your hobbies?
I thoroughly enjoy crafting and often watch the residents when they have crafting afternoons.

If you could have had any job in the world what would you be?
I wouldn't want to do anything other than caring. I feel I was meant to be a carer.
