Something I’ve noticed over the years…
The people who tend to do well in this work aren’t always the ones who start out feeling confident.
They’re the ones who:
• are interested in people
• ask good questions
• are willing to think things through
• don’t mind not knowing everything straight away
Confidence can arrive later, usually when they’re not looking for it quite so hard.

We’ve just heard that our Advanced Hypnotherapy Practitioner course has been accepted by the GHSC.
It’s been a substantial piece of work, which I've co-written with Brian Turner, and is designed to take practitioners beyond the basics into more thoughtful, confident, and reflective practice.
We’ll be making it available on the website soon. Comment “Advanced” below if you want me to PM you when it’s there.

I’ll be running a QPR Su***de Awareness and Prevention session on Zoom on Thursday, 21st May (6-8 pm).
QPR stands for Question, Persuade, Refer — simple, practical steps that can help you support someone who may be struggling.
It’s often described as a bit like CPR, but for mental health.

Weeds or wildflowers?
I suppose it depends on where they’re growing. In a garden, they might get pulled out straight away. In a field, they add to the beauty of the view.
Emotions can be a bit like that. If you feel they’re out of place, they can be awkward or unhelpful. But when you start to understand them and work with them, rather than against them, they make a lot more sense.
That’s the idea behind one of the metaphors in The Metaphor Toolbox. It’s about helping clients see things a little differently, and sometimes that shift in perspective is all that’s needed to get things moving.

Affirmation for Therapists: "I give myself permission to be successful as well as caring."

As therapists, we often find ourselves focused on providing compassionate care, but it's just as important to embrace our own success in the process. Finding that balance between success and compassion can enhance your practice and help you thrive in both aspects.
Remember, success and compassion can coexist. Just allow yourself to experience both.

A quick reminder about the QPR Su***de Awareness course on 21st May.
It’s not about becoming a specialist.
It’s about feeling a little more prepared, just in case the conversation ever arises.
Sometimes that quiet confidence makes all the difference.

A practical one today.
People sometimes ask what I actually use Canva for in my work. The answer is… quite a lot:
• course prospectuses
• client leaflets
• ebooks
• blog graphics
• certificates
• website visuals
Nothing especially glamorous — just a very useful tool that keeps everything consistent and easy to update.
If you use it, I’d be interested to know what you find it most useful for.

The next in-person practitioner training in Castleford will begin in September.
It might feel a long way off, but this is often when people start quietly gathering information, asking questions, and working out whether it’s something they’d like to do later in the year.
If you’re in that stage, you’re very welcome to explore details or arrange a conversation to talk things through.

Can relaxation make anxiety worse?
Most therapists teach relaxation techniques at some point, but occasionally a client reacts in the opposite way. Instead of feeling calmer, they feel more anxious.
This is known as paradoxical anxiety, or relaxation-induced anxiety, and it’s more common than many therapists realise.

In my latest article, I explore:
• why relaxation can sometimes trigger anxiety
• what’s actually happening in the nervous system
• practical ways to adjust your approach in session

You can read this at: https://www.yorkshirehypnotherapytraining.co.uk/paradoxical-anxiety, where there’s also a free client handout you can use to explain the experience and reassure clients who find relaxation uncomfortable.

A small change in wording can make a surprisingly big difference in a session.
Not just what is said, but how it’s said, when it’s said, and how well it fits the person you’re working with.
It’s one of those skills that develops gradually — and once you start to notice it, you see it everywhere.
