Pregnancy care (also called antenatal care) is the care you have while you’re pregnant to help keep you and your baby as healthy as possible.

When you find out you are pregnant, you can refer yourself for NHS pregnancy care so you start care with a midwife right away.

Once you sign up online, the maternity team will contact you to book your first appointment with a midwife.

You should do this by the 10th week of pregnancy, if possible, but it’s never too late to start. If you’re over 10 weeks, refer yourself as soon as you can.

You do not usually need to see a GP. If you’re registered with a GP, they’ll be told about your pregnancy after your first midwife appointment.

Search ‘NHS maternity referral’.

This Sunday, every phone in the UK will be sent an emergency alert test that sets off a loud siren notification, even if your phone is on silent. For women experiencing domestic abuse, a safe phone is a silent phone.

This could cause a risk for women experiencing domestic abuse, as it might reveal hidden phones, often their only lifeline.

If needed, switch off the notifications within your settings.

And remember, the domestic abuse helpline is available 24 hours a day.

Today we are remembering the artist Henry Moore, who was born on this day 127 years ago (30th July 1898).

Henry Moore was born on Roundhill Road, Castleford, and went to Leeds College of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. He was one of the most important and influential British artists of the twentieth century. He produced more than 10,000 artworks, including sculptures, drawings, tapestries and textiles but became best-known for his semi-abstract, monumental bronzes which can be seen all over the world as public works of art, and of course he also gave his name to our surgery!

His sculptures are all around the UK including the Tate Britain and St Paul’s Cathedral in London (see photos); he also gave his name to the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds, which is free to visit, and one of the largest sculpture galleries in Europe. However his sculptures can also be seen even closer to home at Wakefield’s Yorkshire Sculpture Park. He died on 31st August 1986.
