Nollaig na mBan/Women’s Christmas which was also known as the brightest night of the year in many Irish communities.

Today marks the end of the 12 sacred nights, 12 candles were lit and put on the windowsills. In pre electricity days this created a festive glow in the villages and bright light in the night!!

Who doesn’t love an old Irish tradition ?

Nollaig na mban is a pause in the season. A day that recognises how much women carry, and gently invites us to lay it down.

Rooted in irish tradition, today honours rest, care, and connection among women - not as something earned, but as something deserved.

May this women’s christmas be a reminder: Softening is not weakness. It is wisdom.

Remember singing this as a child and while out walking this morning it came into my head 🤔. Got me thinking
Was the robin a poor thing?
Was it not wise to stay in his barn in the warmth letting the season of winter pass gracefully!!

The robin KNEW what to do !! There is so much in this little poem around winter, it stirs quite a lot in me 😂 but I will leave it for you to ponder !!

Wishing a happy Women’s Christmas to women everywhere.

Nollaig na mBan traditionally signalled the close of the Christmas season and offered women a rare moment of rest after weeks of work, hosting, and care.

In many Irish homes, it was a day to step back, meet friends, or enjoy some quiet time without expectation. A small tradition, but one rooted in fairness, recognition, and balance.

The first Nollaig na mBan gathering at The Essence of Energy!!

Thank you ladies for coming and taking the time to delve into rest as we approach the end of the 12 sarced nights!!

We embodied this timeless tradition of showing gratitude and appreciation for all the duties we carried out over the Christmas period.

It was an invitation to breathe, soften, rest and reconnect with our bodies.

We chatted about other old Irish traditions that some still carry forth and one that I never heard of before, was to keep the holly until Shrove Tuesday then burn it for good luck!!
