These amazing 3 ladies are running London Marathon and Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon tomorrow morning and I personally would like to wish them the very best of luck!

I have had the pleasure of treating them over recent months and have been inspired by the absolute love (and hate at times 😂), commitment , dedication and passion they have for running . Their training has been long and gruelling and filled with many ups and downs but like the amazing strong women they are they have overcome obstacles that would have left many to give up.

Good luck and have fun 🤩
When your legs begin to tire run with your heart 💜
You got this 💪🏃‍♀️

🤕 Injury Prevention🤕

As we are hopefully 🤞 looking at a return soon to training and sports I thought it would be helpful to provide some information on injury prevention.

The golden question....”How do I prevent an injury “ 💭 ❓
Answer: You can’t❗️- Injury is unfortunately part and parcel of life and we cannot fully avoid it. Rather, we can reduce our risk of injury by getting the following basics and fundamentals right.

📍 Physical Fitness - How much have you moved / exercised during lockdown? When was the last time you completed some sport specific drills or specific techniques/movements relevant to your sport?

📍 Previous Injuries - Unfortunately one of the biggest risk factors to injury is previous injury 🙈 not what you want to hear right but that doesn’t mean it is inevitable. If you have rehabilitated that injury fully then rest assured that’s all you can do alongside some maintenance strengthening/conditioning.

📍Adequate Nutrition 🍝🥛- It is vitally important to fuel our bodies correctly and particularly when playing sports as there are more demands on our bodies. Adequate nutrition and hydration has been proven to help with performance and reduce injury risk .

📍 Recovery 💆‍♀️ 🛌
Ensure you get adequate sleep 😴
Massage can also be beneficial in aiding recovery 🙌
Most importantly listen to your body!! 😩

Please feel free to share or tag someone you feel might benefit from further guidance on return to their own sport or reducing risk of injury.

Getting the steps in like everyone else 👟🚶‍♀️
And helping my back at the same time!

Yes even us physios can experience injuries too 🙈

Luckily I know that exercise is one of the best things I can do and I certainly feel better after a good walk! Like they say motion is lotion!

If anyone else Is feeling their back a little sore , tight or niggly at the minute get out for a walk ( even only a short one) and you won’t regret it!

Obviously if you are experiencing severe pain or your pain isn’t improving get in touch with a physiotherapist to help get you back on track. 🙌

One of my regular runners in with me tonight. 🙌
This guy ran over 2,000 miles last year without any real significant injuries! 😳

If you exercise regularly please don’t ignore that ni**le or ache. Get it checked out before your ni**le becomes that injury that prevents you from doing whatever you love to do!

✳️ ToP TiP TuEsDaY ✳️

With walking in the mournes proving more and more popular of late I thought I would provide some general tips for long walks or hikes from a physio perspective.

1️⃣ Wear the right footwear
If you are intending on walking for any more than a few hours then investing in a good pair of walking shoes is a must!

Avoid walking long distances in new shoes. Ensure you have worn them in first.

2️⃣ Consider your strength and fitness levels

Make sure you are fit enough for your planned walk. If you are normally quite sedentary then a 10mile hike is going to be a big shock you your system!
Consider doing smaller walks and building up your activity levels before your bigger trip.

3️⃣ Consider any old injuries or areas of weakness

Make sure that you address any pre-existing areas of weakness or old injuries with a physiotherapist. For example, if you have problems with twisting motions or an issue with your knee.
Your physiotherapist will be able to offer you management advice and personalised exercise programmes.

4️⃣ Pace yourself

You should always be able to hold a conversation when you walk and if you’re out of breath then you should slow down or rest for a moment - pace yourself and enjoy the scenery.

5️⃣ Stay Hydrated

You might be tempted to pack a minimal amount of water because of the weight, but it’s so important that you stay properly hydrated.
Always take more water than you would expect to use.
If your muscles become dehydrated then you are increasing your risk of injury and discomfort like cramping.

6️⃣ Remember to warm down

When you’ve finished walking make sure you don’t just sit down and stop.
You need to cool your body down gently.
Keep moving on the spot and do some gentle stretches for your calf and quad muscles.

Happy New Year Everyone!

If your hoping to become more active in 2021 but don’t know where to start as a physiotherapist we are movement specialists and can help 🙌

Any injury, ni**le or discomfort can be managed optimally via video consultations. Even if you aren’t injured but need advice or guidance I have you covered 👍

With Covid-19 rates rising dramatically in recent weeks now more than ever virtual Physiotherapy should be chosen over face to face appointments.

Benefits of virtual consultations:
✅safer
✅reduced risk of COVID-19
✅outcomes as effective as face to face visits in a lot of cases
✅comfort of your own home
✅no passive interventions
✅Evidence based intervention only.

Note: At present Physiotherapy is still deemed as essential healthcare and we are still allowed to provide face to face appointments following telephone consultation and strict infection control procedures/wearing of PPE.

Any query big or small send me a pm and I will get you sorted.

Stay Safe
