Book recommendation: Just Get Started is a heartfelt and empowering guide that tackles some of the most personal and challenging topics many women face, not just during menopause but throughout their lives.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and commend Lisa for her incredible honesty and courage in addressing issues that are often left unspoken—puberty, bad relationships, changes in s*x life, the ability or inability to have children, and more.
Lisa’s writing is deeply personal and relatable, as though she’s sitting across from you, sharing her experiences with genuine warmth and vulnerability. Her approach feels like a supportive conversation rather than a lecture, making the book accessible and engaging. The inclusion of specialists such as menopausal experts, nutritionists, and fitness coaches adds an invaluable depth, providing practical advice alongside Lisa’s personal stories.
That said, I had a couple of reservations. One of the experts in the book dismissed conditions like estrogen dominance and adrenal fatigue, which I found disappointing. As a functional medicine-trained doctor, I believe these topics deserve more open-minded exploration, as they may hold the key to helping many individuals who suffer from related symptoms. Additionally, the book does not touch on the role of genetics and estrogen detoxification, which could have provided further insights into navigating menopause and perimenopause (i mean no specialists mentioned it).
Another very minor criticism is Lisa’s recommendation of alcohol, such as tequila 🍸.While this might resonate with some readers, I felt it was unnecessary for a wellness-focused book. That said, I respect her perspective, as the book reflects her personal journey and views.
Overall, the book is a compassionate, informative, and inspiring guide for women navigating life’s transitions. Lisa’s heartfelt storytelling and the breadth of topics covered make it a valuable resource, even if some aspects could have been explored more deeply. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking comfort, guidance, and a reminder that they’re not alone in their journey.
