INTRODUCING TOBY TAPLIN-LOCKE
to the SPACE timetable.
Over the coming weeks Toby will be covering for Catia and Anna. Toby is a scholar, a gentleman, and a true yogi. In his own words:
Heya John. Sorry it took a while to send this over. Busy weekend… Hope it fits the brief.
I was first introduced to yoga as a child when attending a Buddhist school. A long time passed before I returned to the mat in 2015. Initially, I primarily practiced asana to support daily seated meditation in the Sōtō Zen tradition. In 2020 my practice increasingly became more grounded in yoga than Buddhism. In the five years that followed I experienced more transformation, growth and healing than I had previously found in any other practice. In 2025 I completed my first teacher training at SPACE with Catia and Cherry with the hope of being able to share expansive power I had come to find in yoga.
I believe us all to be first and foremost lifelong students of yoga and hope to create a community of collective learning through my classes. My practice is grounded in the meditative and disciplined orientations of Rāja yoga, seeking to engage with all eight limbs of the practice. As an anthropologist by training and academic in my day job, I also seek to integrate elements of Jñāna yoga to my practice, bringing wisdom from different philosophical, cultural and spiritual traditions together to inform my approach.
My classes tend towards being strong whilst maintaining connection the meditative and spiritual foundations of yoga. I seek to work with and cultivate our inner fire and tapas, as a path towards burning off impurities, imperfections, and ego constructs. I do this whilst maintaining compassionate and curious attention to the subtle flows of breath, body, mind and energy. You can expect my classes to be challenging, inviting you to explore your edges, whilst also remaining accessible, playful and open to all levels.
