Epilepsy Society

Epilepsy Society We are the UK’s only charity transforming the lives of people with epilepsy through world-leading research, advocacy and care. We are here for you.

People are at the heart of everything that we do; and we hope to see the day when epilepsy is irrelevant. Our vision is a full life for everyone affected by epilepsy. We want everyone affected by epilepsy to have the best opportunity for a full life – as free from seizures as possible. We set out to make a difference to every person affected by epilepsy whatever their background, however seriously

it affects them, and whether they have the condition themselves or are close to someone with epilepsy.

We’ve already had three heatwaves declared this summer and we’ve heard from many of you that hot weather has made your epilepsy harder to manage.

In this video, Professor Sanjay Sisodiya, Transformation Director at Epilepsy Society, talks about his research on how climate change can impact people with epilepsy—and why gathering data to help understand this connection is more important than ever.

Please take a few minutes to share your experiences of how hot weather has affected your epilepsy by completing this survey: https://bit.ly/4m6mkFv

The more responses we receive, the better we can understand how extreme weather affects people with epilepsy and help everyone stay safe and prepared.

Have you been treated at the Chalfont Centre?

At our Chalfont Centre we offer many different forms of epilepsy treatment, to many people. In fact, all the people you can see in the photos in this post have been treated here.

If you’ve been treated at the Chalfont Centre, we would love to hear about your experiences—whether through the genomic clinic, a TMS-EEG scan, a visit to Gowers, or a change in treatment that’s improved your quality of life.

By sharing your story, you’ll be helping to inspire others, raise awareness, and drive support for the life-changing work happening here every day.

Claire Siderfin has completed an epic walk from her home in Southeast London to the Epilepsy Society HQ in Chalfont St Peter – a journey of 30 miles!

In the process she raised nearly £1,700 for Epilepsy Society, smashing her original fundraising goal!

A few years ago, Claire was diagnosed with temporal lobe epilepsy. She had experienced auras, seizures, and memory loss.

However, Claire has shown remarkable courage and positivity. She says, ‘I have taken control of the things I can: removing as much stress from my life as possible, eating well, staying fit, being strong, cherishing every moment with special friends and family, living life to the full, and loving work and all the opportunities and friendships it brings.’

What an incredible attitude and what a brilliant effort! Huge congratulations, Claire, and thank you so much for raising money and awareness for Epilepsy Society!

With temperatures rising and extreme weather events like heatwaves occurring more frequently, we would like to hear from you about how climate change is affecting people with epilepsy.

Does hot weather trigger more frequent or severe seizures?
Are your living conditions making the heat harder to manage?
How does the heat affect your wellbeing—and how do you cope?

Professor Sanjay Sisodiya, who is leading research into how climate change affects people with epilepsy, has created a survey which takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. Your answers will be invaluable in building a clearer picture of what people with epilepsy face during extreme weather and will help guide efforts to improve safety during adverse weather events and ensure you have the best possible seizure control.

Helena Napier is an illustrator, graphic designer, and animator currently living and working in London. She was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 17, having experienced focal onset aware seizures and focal onset impaired awareness seizures since the age of 10.

In her profile on the Epilepsy Society website, Helena writes eloquently about receiving her diagnosis and coming to terms with epilepsy while managing the demands of early adulthood:

“The seizures were so pervasive that they touched almost every aspect of my life. They destroyed my memory, and my ability to concentrate or study deteriorated. I was, more often than not, tired, or frustrated or disorientated. Neuronal storms swiftly accelerated my trains of thought. I was creative and bright, but I didn’t try because trying became too hard and often got me nowhere.”

Helena now manages her epilepsy with medication. She is currently seizure-free and working with her neurologist to explore the possibility of a medication-free lifestyle.

Thirteen-year-old Sofia Chambers is making headlines as she competes in the 2025 Regional Hockey Championships—just months after being diagnosed with epilepsy.

In January this year, Sofia, from North Down in Northern Ireland, was found unconscious in her bedroom, and over the following weeks, she experienced a series of increasingly severe seizures. It wasn’t until late March that she received a formal diagnosis of epilepsy and began treatment with anti-seizure medication.

Despite the uncertainty and anxiety surrounding her condition during this time, Sofia remained determined to pursue her passion for hockey, committing herself to intense trials and training for the Ulster Under-13 and Under-16 Hockey Programme.

That dedication has now paid off as she takes to the field to compete at the 2025 Regional Hockey Championships. Her mother, Sophie, said, ‘We as parents are immensely proud of this achievement as it has not been easy for Sofia…Her epilepsy isn't holding her back in any way’.

Sofia is following in the footsteps of other remarkable athletes like rugby star Tommy Freeman and Paralympic judo fighter Evan Molloy—who, despite being diagnosed with epilepsy, have continued to chase their sporting dreams.

Our Story

Our vision is a full life for everyone affected by epilepsy. We want everyone affected by epilepsy to have the best opportunity for a full life – as free from seizures as possible.

We set out to make a difference to every person affected by epilepsy whatever their background, however seriously it affects them, and whether they have the condition themselves or are close to someone with epilepsy.

More than half a million people in the UK have epilepsy and one third have seizures that cannot be controlled through available anti-epileptic drugs. There are 1,000 deaths from the condition every year, including many children and young adults. Epilepsy can have a devastating effect on people and their families, affecting all aspects of their lives.

Epilepsy Society is the UK’s leading provider of epilepsy services. Through our cutting edge research, awareness campaigns, information resources and expert care, we work for everyone affected by epilepsy in the UK.
