Why do people volunteer at Blythe House Hospice? Everyone has their own reason.💙

Some of our volunteers are retired and keen to stay active and connected. Others are looking to build confidence, gain experience, or develop their CV. Many simply want to meet new people, give something back, or be part of something meaningful in their local community.

While our volunteers aren’t paid, the rewards are priceless. They know their time is valued by patients, families and staff, and that they are part of a team making a real difference to people living with a life-limiting illness, and those affected by bereavement.

There are wonderful social benefits too - friendships with fellow volunteers, connections with staff, and conversations with patients at the hospice, and customers in our shops, that brighten everyone’s day.

We also provide free, high-quality training tailored to each role, giving you the chance to learn new skills and grow in confidence.

One of our kind-hearted volunteers from our Thursday afternoon patient peer support group recently commented: 'I love the thought of our patients doing things they didn’t think they’d be able to make and create. Thank you for having me as a volunteer, I personally get so much out of my time with you.'

If you’ve ever thought about volunteering, this could be your moment. Join us and help make a difference right here in our community - click the 'Volunteer for us' tab via the link in our bio. 💙

SMALL change makes a HUGE difference!💙

While many of us are spending more on cards and smartphones, loose change still plays a vital role in supporting hospice care.

Throughout 2025, our collection pots in local businesses raised an incredible £10,627 for Blythe House - that’s £150 more than in 2024, showing that those pennies really do add up.

This wonderful total will fund a full course of counselling and play therapy for 11 children who have experienced the death of a parent, helping them to make sense of what has happened and begin to heal.

We’d love for your business to get involved by hosting a collection pot and helping raise funds for local patients and their families. If you’d like one, please drop us a message on Facebook, call: 01298 875 089, or email: fundraising@blythehouse.co.uk

Challenge Derbyshire Ball raises over £90,000 for local hospice care 💙

We're sending huge, genuine thanks to the organisers and supporters of after this year’s ball raised more than £90,000 for hospice care across North Derbyshire – helping the initiative surpass an incredible £2 million raised since it began.

Held on Saturday 7th March at the Devonshire Dome in Buxton, the eighth annual ball brought together local businesses and supporters for a memorable evening dedicated to supporting end of life care in the local community.

The initiative was founded in 2015 by David Hopkins, who said: 'We’re absolutely delighted that this year’s ball has raised such a fantastic amount, taking our overall total beyond £2 million. It’s a milestone that reflects the incredible generosity and commitment of local businesses and individuals who continue to support this cause year after year.'

Becca Gregory, our Fundraising Manager, added: 'Only 28% of Blythe House Hospice’s running costs come from the NHS. That means a huge 7 in every 10 of our patients receive care that is funded by our local community, through events like the Ball. The kindness shown will help ensure people across North Derbyshire can continue to receive free, expert hospice care when they need it most.'

‘Honestly, when it was suggested, I thought, I’m not dying, why would I need help from a hospice? I genuinely believed a hospice was for people at the end of life. I had no idea about all the other work you do.’

When Vicky was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease over a decade ago, she had no idea how much her health – and life - would change. Now in her early fifties, she lives with stage 3 kidney disease, heading to stage 4, caused by damage sustained when she was ill as a child but didn’t realise it at the time. Her kidney function sits around 25–30%, and in 2023, she suffered a heart attack that turned her world upside down.

After being referred by her social prescriber, Vicky was initially hesitant when she heard the words Blythe House Hospice, but despite her reservations, Vicky agreed to meet with Emma, Hospice Nurse, who explained more about our FAB (Fatigue, Anxiety and Breathlessness) programme: ‘I made no promises about going, but when I came to see Emma and talked through the FAB programme - the coping strategies, the breathing exercises for when I felt anxious or out of control, I realised this was exactly what I needed.'

From her very first FAB session, Vicky noticed a change: ‘It just felt warm and welcoming - relaxed, no pressure whatsoever. By the end of the programme, a fellow member of the group said: “You’ve really got a lot out of this, haven’t you? You were quiet as a mouse and now we can’t shut you up!” That was down to the people who delivered it - Emma, Karen, Miriam and Angela - their mannerisms, tone of voice, everything. It was pretty much perfect.’

Through FAB, Vicky learnt techniques that have become part of her daily routine and changed how she approaches life: ‘I meditate every day now - it helps me relax and manage my breathing. I’ve noticed I don’t have as many panic attacks or migraines, which were caused by stress and anxiety. It’s given me time back to do the things I enjoy.

‘The difference it’s made is really significant. Blythe House has set me back on the path of my life. I’ve learnt to be open and get out of my comfort zone — and that’s made all the difference.’💙

Global Recycling Day 🌍

Today is a brilliant reminder that small actions can make a lasting difference - for our planet, and for local families who rely on hospice care.

We’re incredibly grateful for every donation we receive at our hospice shops. Did you know that only 28% of Blythe House Hospice’s running costs come from the NHS? The rest is raised through our charity shops, donations and fundraising events.

Every clean, undamaged and sale-ready donation has the power to make a real difference. From clothing and homeware to books and toys, items sold in our shops support hospice care at home and in the community.

When items are damaged, soiled or incomplete, we must pay to dispose of them - costing the charity thousands of pounds each year that could otherwise be spent on patient care. When you’re thinking of donating, please consider:
✅️ If you’d buy it, we can sell it
✅️ Clean, complete and in good condition

By donating well, you’re not only protecting the environment and reducing waste - you’re helping to ensure more money goes directly towards local hospice services. 💙

Today, Team Blythe House start their real wilderness adventure as they trek deeper into the Saharan Desert! They’ll be covering around 12.5 miles (20km) today, and the same again tomorrow, scaling vast sand dunes, ancient riverbeds and wide plains. 🌴🐪

Tonight and tomorrow, they’ll be sleeping in traditional campsites with no access to running water, electricity or toilets. Throughout the trek, the expert Berber guides will offer insights into the way the nomadic people survive in the inhospitable desert environment, and the support team will cook superb local cuisine.

Are you feeling inspired by the team’s incredible adventure? Find out more about our 2027 overseas trek to Machu Picchu in Peru and get involved to support Blythe House Hospice: https://blythehousehospice.org.uk/machu-picchu/ 💙
