May is National walking month

This is an annual campaign that promotes the benefits of walking. It’s an opportunity to celebrate walking’s positive impact on physical health, mental wellbeing, and the environment – whether you do it for leisure, fitness or your daily commute.

Walking regularly offers significant mental health benefits, including reduced stress, anxiety, and depression. It releases mood-boosting endorphins, enhances sleep quality, improves self-esteem, and boosts energy levels by increasing blood flow to the brain.
Even short, daily walks can promote relaxation, mental clarity, and improved cognitive function.
This years theme is encouraging people to fit walking into their daily lives, walking to the shops instead of driving, or just going for a walk in the day, walking at lunch time instead of sitting at your desk, going for a walk with friends or family and just chatting with no distractions or interuptions.

This Saturday I took on the
50 miles. 8,766 feet of elevation. Over the Yorkshire 3 peaks of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough starting at Malham cove, the Dry Valley of Watlowes, Malham tarn, Fountains Fell, Janet’s foss.

This was one of the hardest events I’ve done - on par with the hundred miler I did last year. Endless climbing and stumbling over boulders as big as me! And coming down harder somehow than going up!

But. I was also surrounded by the most stunning scenery I’ve experienced. I’ve never been to this part of the country, I’ve only read and seen it in pictures. But that didn’t do it justice. The quiet - except endless sheep! - meant I was left with just processing the thoughts and just pushing myself further and onto the end. And wow the views!

I was joined on this by and Frank Wheeler with support along the way from Dawn Deslow and Laura Pain - thank you for keeping me company and you’re cheering me in at the end Dawn and Frank!

I wanted a silver medal of 201-400 placed. But ended up at 407 after a little detour. After a bit of reframing, I thought I finished one of the toughest events I’ve done, and I’m proud of finishing - lots didn’t.

I forgot to take a finishers pic. I’m waiting for the official pictures being loaded. But Frank caught me in this picture which I think sums up perfectly how I felt at the end. Thanks Frank. I think!

A tough day, but well worth it 🏅

Your journey day to day is up and down,
It’s the direction of travel over the weeks and months that count.

We can often see setbacks as major hurdles, the journey you will take will often not be a straight line. The key is to see these setbacks as part of the journey.
Looking at how far you have come or achieved will put the setback into perspective.

Five healthy habits to improve your mental health

Gratitude; Try to find something to be grateful for in every situation.

Helping others; boosts your own happiness and prevents you from
rumminating about your own problems.

Self Care; engage in activities that enrich your life, lower stress and refresh you, such as long walks, getting out in nature, gardening, walking the dog.

Friendships and relationships; take the time to maintain your long term relationships.
Creativity; take time away from screens, paint, take photos, write, dance or do something you enjoy.

Prioritise your happiness today.
it doesn't have to be a big or expensive thing, even a small act can bring a smile to your face.
Simple actions like savoring a favorite coffee, taking a brief nature walk to feel the sun, dancing to music, or expressing gratitude can significantly boost your mood.

I came across this quote from Dr. Seuss.

“BE WHO YOU ARE AND SAY WHAT YOU FEEL, BECAUSE THOSE WHO MIND DON’T MATTER AND THOSE WHO MATTER DON’T MIND.” (DR. SEUSS)

We often worry what strangers will think, what will people say etc.
But what if we only worried about what the people that we know and care about would say, how freeing would that be.

This comment was made to me recently, this got me thinking, why do we percieve other peoples lives this way, are they more "sorted" or are they just better at the illusion.

The belief that everyone else has their life "sorted out"
This is an illusion fueled by social media and curated highlights, rather than reality.
In truth, most people are navigating uncertainty, adapting, and learning, just like you.

Focusing on your own growth rather than comparing it to other people, will ultimately make you happier in life.

I came across this quote by Criss Jami
You can receive all the compliments in the world, but that won't mean a thing unless you believe it.

Sometimes we all think we don't deserve kindness, or nice comments, but we do.
Sometimes we think there is an alternative motive for the nice words or compliments, but what if there isn't?

What if we accept the compliments for what they are.
What if we just say thank you.
