Lordswood Osteopathic Clinic

Lordswood Osteopathic Clinic The Lordswood Osteopathic Clinic was established in 2010 and is run by Sue Jennings, BSc (Hons), Ost

I was born and have lived in Chatham all of my life, so when choosing where to open my osteopathic clinic, I always knew it would be in my local area of Lordswood so that I could offer help to the local community with their muscle, joint or back pain. Since opening the practice in 2010, it has grown significantly so that it now offers two treatment rooms and a really relaxed and calm waiting room for patients. Our services have grown too so that now we not only offer osteopathy and cranial osteopathy, we also offer sports massage and medical acupuncture. As well as working at the practice, I assist with the examination process for the undergraduate osteopathic students at the European School of Osteopathy, Boxley, Maidstone. I examine the students on clinical neurology which is the assessment of the nervous system and is I feel, one of the most important parts of osteopathy. This special interest of mine has allowed me to help patients with neurological based problems such as disc injuries (prolapses), neurological migraines and strokes. I consider osteopathy to be very effective due to the wide range of different techniques available to the osteopath which allows each treatment to be suited to the individual patient. This means that treatment can be very successful but also means that the patient is very relaxed and confident within their treatment and rehabilitation stretches and exercises.

✂️ That scar from years ago might still be affecting you today.

Scar tissue doesn’t just sit there doing nothing once it’s healed. It can create tightness, restrict movement and even cause pain in completely different areas of your body.

A C-section scar could affect your core strength. An old appendectomy scar could contribute to back pain. A surgical scar on your knee could change how you walk.

At Lordswood Osteopathic Clinic, we offer specialised scar therapy using the RESTORE method, a technique developed by leading UK scar specialist Emma Holly and used in both NHS and private healthcare.

The treatment is gentle, working to improve tissue mobility and reduce restrictions. Whether your scar is recent or decades old, there’s often something we can do to help it function better.

Many people feel immediate relief from tightness they didn’t even realise was there.

🎯 Foam Rolling: Helpful Tool or Potential Problem?

Foam rollers have become incredibly popular for self-massage and muscle release. But there’s a right way and a wrong way to use them – and the wrong way can actually make things worse.

Where foam rolling can help:

✅ IT band tightness (outer thigh).
✅ Tight calves and hamstrings.
✅ Upper back tension.
✅ Quadriceps (front of thigh) tightness.

Where you should avoid foam rolling:
❌ Directly on your lower back (can compress the spine).
❌ Over joints themselves.
❌ Areas with sharp or shooting pain.
❌ Anywhere with bruising or swelling.

How to foam roll safely:
🔄 Move slowly – no rapid rolling back and forth.
🔄 When you find a tender spot, pause for 20-30 seconds.
🔄 Breathe normally – don’t hold your breath.
🔄 It should feel uncomfortable but not agonising.
🔄 Stop if you experience sharp pain or tingling.

Think of foam rolling as a supplement to proper treatment, not a replacement. It can help maintain mobility between osteopathic sessions but it won’t fix underlying problems on its own.

If you’re unsure whether foam rolling is appropriate for your specific issue, just ask us during your next appointment.

Knee pain is one of those issues that people tend to dismiss as “just getting older” or “part of being active.” But persistent knee discomfort shouldn’t be something you just put up with. Common knee problems we see:

🔸 Pain when climbing stairs or getting up from sitting.
🔸 Stiffness after periods of inactivity.
🔸 Clicking or grinding sensations.
🔸 Swelling after activity.
🔸 Instability or feeling like your knee might give way.

Knee pain can stem from various causes – arthritis, ligament issues, cartilage problems, muscle imbalances, or even issues in your hips or feet that are affecting how your knee functions.

At Lordswood Osteopathic Clinic, we don’t just focus on your knee in isolation. We look at how your whole leg is working, your walking pattern and what might be contributing to the strain on your knee joint.

Through hands-on treatment and targeted exercises, we can help reduce pain and inflammation, improve knee joint mobility, address muscle imbalances around the knee and support better movement patterns to prevent recurrence.

Your knees carry you through life and they deserve proper attention when they start struggling.

Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) is one of the most frustrating conditions to experience. Your shoulder gradually becomes stiffer and more painful, limiting simple activities you used to take for granted.

Classic signs of frozen shoulder include:

🔸 Progressive loss of movement in all directions.
🔸 Pain that’s worse at night, affecting sleep.
🔸 Difficulty with everyday tasks – fastening a bra, reaching for your seatbelt, putting on a coat.
🔸 Pain deep in the shoulder joint.
🔸 Feeling like your shoulder is “locked”.

Frozen shoulder typically develops in stages – the freezing stage (increasing pain and stiffness), the frozen stage (very restricted movement) and the thawing stage (gradual improvement). The whole process can take 18 months to three years without intervention.

At Lordswood Osteopathic Clinic, we work with people at all stages of frozen shoulder. While we can’t cure it overnight, we can help:

✅ Manage pain more effectively.
✅ Maintain as much movement as possible.
✅ Prevent compensatory problems in your neck and upper back.
✅ Support you through the recovery process with appropriate exercises.

Early intervention often means better outcomes and less severe symptoms.

🔧 When was the last time you actually checked in with your body?

You service your car regularly. You make sure your boiler gets its annual check. You wouldn’t dream of ignoring the warning lights on your dashboard.

But what about your body? How long have you been ignoring those warning signs?

The lower back that’s “not too bad, just a bit stiff sometimes”. The shoulder that only hurts when you do certain movements, so you’ve just stopped doing them. The neck tension that’s become so familiar you barely notice it anymore.

January is a natural time to reassess – not because of New Year pressure but because it’s a fresh start and a chance to address things you’ve been putting off.

At Lordswood Osteopathic Clinic, we offer comprehensive assessments that look at: ✅ How your body is moving and functioning.
✅ Areas of restriction or imbalance.
✅ Patterns that might be causing ongoing issues.
✅ What you can do to prevent problems developing.

Think of it as an MOT for your body – identifying issues before they become bigger problems and ensuring everything is working as it should.

Starting the year by actually addressing your physical health rather than just making vague resolutions about it? Now that’s a goal worth keeping!

Getting back into exercise after the festive break? Sports massage can help!

If you’re one of the people returning to regular exercise in January, your body might need some support transitioning back.

After weeks of reduced activity, changed routines and festive indulgence, jumping straight back into your previous training intensity is a recipe for injury.

Sports massage can help by:
🏃♀️ Releasing tension built up during the inactive period.
🏃♀️ Improving circulation to muscles preparing for increased activity.
🏃♀️ Addressing any niggles or imbalances before they become injuries.
🏃♀️ Supporting recovery between training sessions.
🏃♀️ Reducing muscle soreness as you rebuild fitness.

At Lordswood Osteopathic Clinic, our sports massage isn’t just for athletes. It’s for anyone who’s active – whether you’re training for an event, playing weekend sport or simply trying to maintain a regular exercise routine.

Starting the year with a sports massage can help identify areas that need attention and ensure your body is ready for the activity you’re planning.

Better to address potential problems now than deal with injuries in February.

08/01/2026

After the festive period of overindulgence and under-movement, your body needs easing back into activity – not shocking with extreme exercise regimes you’ll abandon by February.

Why not try some of these more realistic January movement ideas:
🌟 A daily 15-minute walk, even if it’s just around your neighbourhood.
🌟 Gentle stretching while the kettle boils.
🌟 Taking the stairs when you’d normally use the lift.
🌟 Playing actively with children or grandchildren.
🌟 Following along with short exercise videos at home.
🌟 Parking further away to add extra steps to your day.

The goal isn’t to become a different person – it’s to help your current body feel better and function more comfortably.

At Lordswood Osteopathic Clinic, we can help identify any restrictions or imbalances that might be making movement uncomfortable, so you can stay active without pain getting in the way.

Movement doesn’t have to be punishing to be beneficial.

January can feel particularly tough. The excitement of Christmas has passed, the weather is grim and spring feels impossibly far away. Many people experience low mood during this period, but there’s often a physical component that gets overlooked.

The connection between physical and mental wellbeing works both ways:
💙 Chronic pain can contribute to low mood and anxiety.
💙 Reduced activity levels affect both body and mind.
💙 Poor sleep from discomfort impacts emotional resilience.
💙 Physical tension from stress creates more physical problems.

When you’re feeling low, your body often reflects it – slouched posture, reduced movement, muscles that feel heavy and achy. And when your body hurts or feels restricted, it’s harder to maintain a positive outlook.

At Lordswood Osteopathic Clinic, we understand this mind-body connection well. We also work alongside Paul Wren, an award-winning hypnotherapist and mind coach based here at our clinic, so we can support both physical and emotional wellbeing.

Sometimes addressing the physical discomfort can be an important step in improving how you feel overall during these darker months.

You don’t have to struggle through winter carrying both emotional and physical weight.

January brings a tidal wave of pressure to completely transform yourself. New fitness regimes, dramatic lifestyle overhauls, unrealistic goals that feel exhausting before you’ve even started.

But what if this year, instead of trying to become someone new, you just helped your current body feel better?

No punishing exercise routines that leave you injured by week two. No ignoring the aches and pains you’ve been carrying into 2026. No pretending everything’s fine when your body has been trying to tell you otherwise.

At Lordswood Osteopathic Clinic, we’re not interested in January transformation rhetoric. We’re interested in helping you move more comfortably, manage the discomfort you’ve been putting up with and support your body to function better.

Whether that’s addressing the back pain that’s been niggling for months, sorting out the shoulder that won’t let you sleep properly, or simply feeling more at ease in your own body – that’s transformation enough.

You don’t need to be “new” – you just need to feel better.
