As parents, we all want to support our children through difficult moments. But sometimes it can be hard to know when they might need a little extra help.

You might notice your child:
• withdrawing from friends or family
• worrying more than usual
• having big emotional reactions or mood swings
• struggling with thoughts or feelings that feel overwhelming

If something doesn’t feel quite right, trust your instincts. Reaching out for support is a positive step, not a failure.

At bMindful Psychology, we offer one-to-one therapy for children and young people, providing a safe, supportive space where they can explore their feelings with a trusted professional. Our team use a range of therapeutic approaches tailored to each child’s needs, including talking therapies, CBT, creative therapies and occupational therapy.

Sometimes a conversation can be the first step towards helping your child feel more understood and supported.

How to Support Children with ADHD Using Movement Breaks, here are our Top 5 Neuro-Affirming Ways.
If you’re parenting a child or teenager with ADHD, you may have been told (explicitly or subtly) that they “move too much”, “can’t sit still”, or “need to learn self-control”.

From a neuro-affirming occupational therapy perspective, we see this very differently.

Feeling safe and understood is central to a child’s mental health. For many children and young people, communication differences can make new environments, or even a new teacher, feel overwhelming.

Speech and Language Therapists play a vital role in helping children feel that school is their place.

Through tools such as:

🔹 Social Stories – preparing young people for change (like a new teacher), helping them understand what to expect, explore solutions, and reduce uncertainty.

🔹 Communication Keyrings – offering a discreet, non-verbal way to express needs when speaking feels too difficult, reducing anxiety and frustration.

When children can understand what’s happening and communicate their needs, they feel safer, more confident, and more at home in their environment.
Supporting communication is supporting mental health.

Did you know water play and role play is used with younger children to support things like coordination, balance and overall development.
But why?
The short answer?
Because for young children, play is how the brain and body learn best.

Water play is a whole-body experience
Pouring, scooping, squeezing, stirring and reaching all support:
• Hand–eye coordination
• Bilateral coordination
• Graded control and strength
• Postural stability and balance

The resistance of water provides natural feedback, helping children understand how their bodies move and how much force to use without it feeling like “exercise”.

Balance & core control in disguise

Standing at a tray, leaning, weight-shifting, reaching across midline or kneeling during water play all quietly challenge balance and core strength. These are key foundations for gross motor skills, sitting attention and later fine motor tasks.

When role play is embedded (e.g. washing toys, rescuing animals, running a shop), children are:
• More motivated to repeat movements (essential for motor learning)
• Practising planning, sequencing and coordination
• Engaging socially and emotionally, not just physically

For younger children especially those with SEMH needs role play also supports emotional safety, confidence and connection, which are crucial for engagement.

Regulation first, skills second
Water play is often calming and organising for the nervous system. When children feel regulated and secure, they are far more able to work on balance, coordination and motor skills.

So while it may look like “just play”, water play with role play is a purposeful, developmentally appropriate intervention that supports physical skills and emotional wellbeing at the same time.

For young children, play isn’t a break from therapy it is the therapy.
