There are 3 crucial elements of rehabilitation towards strength and independence following Stroke, Neuro condition or in fact most rehab!

These state that exercise must be
- TASK SPECIFIC- it may seem obvious but you need to make sure exercises are specific towards the goals you want to achieve, if you want to be able to walk to the shops, which involves a very steep hill, there is no point only practicing on the flat smooth floor indoors!
- REPETITIVE- hopefully you will have heard this many times before and will hear it again and again. Exercise NEEDS to be repeated again and again and again. This is how new pathways are made in the brain and new skills can be learnt. I know this sounds boring, there are ways to mix it up, get in touch for specific examples.
- INTENSE- If you want to make change then you need to do something that is a little out of your comfort zone, eg. A little bit difficult for you. Sometimes you will need a bit of help to achieve this, this can be done with a Physiotherapists hands on help, electrical stimulation, orthotics and other specialist equipment.

"PEOPLE WITH STROKE SHOULD BE CONSIDERED TO HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO BENEFIT FROM REHABILITATION AT ANY POINT AFTER THEIR STROKE" 💪

National clinical guidelines have been updated for 2023 for stroke.

These detail the best practice management of those that have suffered a stroke from its first incidence right through to recovery and prevention.

Some of the new changes include

- recommended increased therapy time to 3hrs therapy a day with 6hrs self directed
- recommended 30-40mins of cardio or mixed training 3-5times a week

And that rehab could be beneficial at any point 🥳

Out of 538 recommendations in this guideline, almost 300 have been updated, added or endorsed since the 2016 edition. Here are highlights of some of the changes, together with the change to the geographical remit of the guideline, which now covers the four nations of the United Kingdom, and the Repu...

Exercising your hand and arm after a stroke or neurological event should not be forgotten!

Initially after a stroke your focus might be getting back to walking, but make sure you are spending time on your arm exercises too.

Functional repetitive practice is arguably the most important and beneficial thing you can do- this will translate differently for most depending on your ability level and your goals.

Put basically
- set your goals alongside your therapist
- try to set an environment to practice the thing you want to achieve!
- vary the direction, speed, amplitude etc
- REPEAT REPEAT REPEAT

Even better if you can make it enjoyable with targets, games, goals etc

Gait re-education with my post stroke client to improve walking pattern, reducing chances of falls, injuries and most importantly making for a happy client 😁

Shared with permission from my lovely client who is independent walking with his stick and working towards independent walking without an aid!
