BREATH OF FRESH AIR

In a yoga practice, the breath is everything. It is your anchor and guide through seated meditation and moving meditation (yoga flows).

Breathing deeply, with a slow and steady inhalation and exhalation, signals your parasympathetic nervous system to calm your body down. You may have heard the phrase “rest and digest”. This is the parasympathetic nervous system working. Long deep breaths can also manage stress responses to help decrease anxiety, fear and racing thoughts.

Taking this further, try breathing slowly whilst indoors and notice the impact that breath has on your body.

Now move yourself outside. Pause to feel the breeze on your face and notice how your senses are lit up by the sights and sounds around you. Take a deep breath
in and a long breath out.

Can you feel the difference? Is there an ‘aliveness’ you didn’t feel when you were inside? Which did you prefer?

MORNING MOVEMENT

As we move out of winter and that feeling of sleepy hibernation, a spring yoga practice ideally includes more active breathing exercises and movement to create heat and boost circulation in the body.

Try a few rounds of sun salutations to start the day or, if this is an unfamiliar sequence, take lovely big circles at each of the joints (think neck, wrist, ankle and hip circles) before moving in and out of a cat/cow flow.

Invite warmth in and move in a way that leaves your body feeling energised from head to toe 🧘🏼‍♀️

HELLO MARCH…

…and spring, the season of new beginnings 🌷

This month I am committed to sharing more posts more frequently but, as is always my intention, doing so mindfully and with purpose.

We’re all busy people and time is precious, right? So I want every post to be useful and worth the time you’ve taken to pause and read it 😌

As we leave winter behind, early spring welcomes a lightness into our days as well as our food, breathing practices and general movement. This month I’ll be sharing suggestions of ways to energise the body and mind in order to breathe some vibrancy back into your day!

MEET THE INSTRUCTOR!

Full disclosure - I'm a naturally private person, but I know how much I appreciate it when others share about themselves on their social media. Here goes... 🌺

I began a daily yoga practice at home well over a decade ago to manage stress and ease the physical aches from working in a busy corporate office in London. It quickly became my favourite time of day - that wonderful feeling of lightness and calm after yoga was sooo good!

My wonderful friend introduced me to studio classes. At the time this was quite scary for me as I'd spent years learning yoga poses by myself in my living room with no one to 'judge' my performance! It turned out to be great fun and I loved the energy from breathing and flowing in a beautiful studio space all together.

I took this little lesson on bravery and signed up for my first yoga retreat with the super talented Cat Meffan and soon after I registered for my 200hr yoga teacher training course.

Was this me? Was I really going to be a yoga teacher?! 🤔 ...Yes!

I am now qualified to teach ashtanga vinyasa, prenatal, postnatal and yin yoga with more qualifications to come in 2022 (watch this space!).

If there's something you love and it makes you healthier and happier, then please go for it! Give it a try, you never know what great things might happen, what life changing experiences you might have and what special people you might meet along the way!
