Here’s how we treated this client’s “gummy smile” using only dermal filler. ⬇️
We’re proud to not only show you the before and after of our work, but also explain why we do what we do, because this is where the magic really happens!
You see a gummy smile treatment, we see… so much more.
Excessive gingival display, or a “gummy smile”, can be caused by a multitude of factors. In this patient’s case, the visible gum show on animation was caused by an overactive facial muscle called the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi, also known as the LLSAN.
Whilst we commonly use a muscle relaxant to treat this concern, results can be short lived and aren’t always guaranteed. Impairing the muscle function around the mouth can also be bothersome for some, as it can affect speech and certain mouth movements.
After consultation, we decided to take an alternate approach and use dermal filler to treat this. Fillers last much longer and have less potential to impair oral function.
We treated the lips directly, focusing on volumising the lower portion of the upper lip to show less gum when smiling. We then added a small amount of filler at the pyriform space to essentially slow down the activity of the LLSAN by way of myomodulation.
This I s the change in activity of a facial muscle when filler is inserted next to it.
The result is a softer smile with less gum show, without taking away what makes her smile hers ✨
