Lung Cancer Screening Programme
The Lung Cancer Screening Programme is a National Programme overseen by NHS England and offers free targeted lung cancer screening to those who are at an increased risk from lung cancer due to being former or current smokers.
Patients will be invited to attended Lung Cancer Screening if they are aged 55-74 and have been coded in their GP record as ever having smoked.
The main aims of the programme are to increase early detection of lung cancer and to reduce lung cancer mortality. Since 2020, the programme has been rolling out across MSE and over 31,000 patients have now been assessed. 263 lung cancers have been identified, of which 76% have been diagnosed at Stage 1&2, when curative treatment can be offered.
