That post-massage yawn though 😂💤

As the weather changes and competition season ramps up, horses’ bodies work harder than most people realise — tighter muscles, compensating patterns, stiffness from colder mornings or increased workload can all start creeping in. Regular sports massage helps keep them comfortable, moving freely, and feeling their best before little issues become bigger ones.

…plus apparently it’s exhausting being this relaxed 😴

Add this in daily 🥕
Most people know the classic “carrot between the front legs” stretch, but did you know you’re not just stretching the topline, you’re actually encouraging your horse to lift through the thoracic sling and engage the deep postural muscles that support you as a rider?

🥕 When your horse reaches down between the front fetlocks, you’re asking for controlled flexion through the neck, withers, and back, but the amazing part is what is happening underneath. Muscles like the serratus ventralis and other deep stabilisers switch on, helping to elevate the ribcage and really improve posture over time. If this is done properly, it isn’t just a stretch, it’s a quiet strength exercise and a brilliant reset for how your horse carries themselves.

🐎 Take your time with it. The movement should be slow and deliberate, with no snatching at the carrot, and the horse standing square so they aren’t shifting away from the effort. Only ask for as much as they can comfortably offer without tension.

Stretchy session after yesterday’s Easter’s ride 🥰

Rehabilitation & Maintenance 🙌
Gently stretching your horse’s tail downwards and to each side can be a really good addition to your routine, as long as it’s done carefully.

✅ It’s a great way to improve mobility through the pelvis and lower back, especially around the sacroiliac region where horses can quite easily become restricted.

✅ You’ll also be encouraging activation of the core and postural muscles, helping with stability through the trunk and hindquarters.

✅ By lightly stimulating around the base of the tail, you’re supporting proprioception too, so your horse becomes more aware of its body and balance, which is really helpful in both rehabilitation and maintenance work.

✅ Working evenly to both sides can highlight (and help address) any asymmetries in flexibility or movement patterns.

😌 It’s also lovely for releasing tension through the hindquarters, you will feel them soften or see them visibly relax into it.

💤 And finally, it can encourage that parasympathetic “rest and relax” response, making it a really nice way to finish a session or settle your horse.

I tend to hold each side for around 10–30 seconds, gradually building up to 30 seconds to a minute as they get more comfortable. As always, ask your equine bodyworker to show you the correct technique 🙌

Slow moments like this are just as important as the work 💭✨

Letting him switch off, relax, and really absorb the session — you can see the difference when they soften like this.

Releases don’t always look dramatic… sometimes they’re quiet, subtle, and exactly what the body needs 🤍🐴

When the massage hits just right… 🥱😂

Nothing better than a big yawn after a session. A good sign someone is feeling a little more relaxed and the tension is starting to melt away.

Safe to say this one approved of their treatment. 🐴

All the tension leaving in one go 😮‍💨
A massive release for such a small pony — that jaw stretch says it all.” 🐴💆‍♀️
