Issues anywhere in the spine might have a knock-on effect on our breathing mechanics. The mid back is directly connected to the rib-cage. Issues of the spine could create restrictions and tension in ways that alter or inhibit our breathing mechanics. Or vice versa. This might manifest as pain, stiffness, poor posture, a sense we’re not breathing efficiently, or perhaps a more general feeling of not being at our best physically and emotionally. This obviously has implications on movement and general wellbeing.

Osteopathy considers your mechanics, medical history and breathing patterns and works towards optimising your wellbeing.

Considering the mechanics of the thoracic spine/mid back. Like the vertebrae elsewhere, they have spinous processes and transverse processes. These are important for muscles to attach to and to power movement.

There is also a joint on each side allowing movement between each vertebrae. But there is limited movement in this region of the spine, as the ribs also attach to the thoracic vertebrae. So this provides mobility of the ribs for breathing, but also the more solid rib cage for protection of the vital organs.

The shoulder blades sit on the back of the rib cage, and attach our shoulders/arms to the thorax.

Osteopaths look at the position and function of the entire thorax to address muscular and joint problems. Sometimes a look at the body above and below is also necessary.

More locally Osteopaths might work on the spinal joints, rib joints, shoulder complex, and the associated muscles to improve mobility and reduce pain.

I personally find the thoracic spine a very interesting area to consider and treat.

It is of course the mid back, and it consists of 12 thoracic vertebrae.

It is naturally less mobile. This relates to its connection with the rib cage. Forming a protective structure around some vital organs. Sometimes pain in this area is not always of a muscular or joint origin, it may be referred from another area or organ.

It connects the neck and the lower back, and is also integral with shoulder and rib mechanics. It is often important to consider, even if it’s not the bit that hurts. The mid back needs to work as part of the team, in order to support it’s connections.

Supporting the function of this area is important within an osteopathic treatment for a number of reasons. Watch this space!

Referred pain is pain experienced in an area different to the origin of the problem.

Neck Issues commonly refer to the shoulder and the arm.

Osteopaths assess the neck, shoulder and whole body relationships, and are able to identify the root of the problem.

As an osteopath I now see many people who have physical pain alongside the use of gadgets in their daily lives.

There is increasing evidence we are also “re-wiring” our brains for the negative - issues alongside addiction and the rewards created by online interactions, notification pings, likes on social media…

It’s not all bad, but should we consider a change in habits for our long term wellbeing?
