Lovely news this week.
I had a message from a daughter to say:
“We got it!!!! Thanks so much for all your help. Mum and I really appreciate it.”
This was about an Attendance Allowance application for her 91-year-old mum, who I’ll call Mrs R.
What is important about this one is that the original application had been turned down. The family had already had support with completing the Attendance Allowance application, but it was still refused.
That is so frustrating, especially when families are already doing so much.
I carried out a full Occupational Therapy assessment, spoke with the family, gathered the right information, and was able to clearly show how Mrs R’s health conditions were affecting her day-to-day life.
Mrs R lives alone, is increasingly frail, has poor balance, reduced strength, profound deafness, a history of falls, and needs regular help with things like showering, dressing, transfers, meals, medication, appointments, household tasks and staying safe at home.
On paper, some of these things can sound quite ordinary.
But when you look properly at the whole picture — the falls risk, the fatigue, the fear of showering after a previous fall, the difficulty getting in and out of bed, the grip problems, the communication difficulties, the reliance on family and carers — it becomes much clearer why Attendance Allowance may be appropriate.
That is often the bit that gets missed.
It is not just about listing diagnoses.
It is about explaining what actually happens day to day.
What does the person need help with?
What would be unsafe without support?
What does the family quietly do in the background?
What has changed?
What are they no longer managing confidently or safely?
As part of the assessment, I was also able to offer some practical advice and tips around managing safely at home, because for me this is not just about forms. It is about helping people stay as safe, independent and well-supported as possible.
If you have an older parent, relative, neighbour or friend who is struggling more than they used to, they may be eligible for Attendance Allowance.
And yes, people can still be eligible even if they are proud, independent, “managing”, or insisting they are absolutely fine while everyone else is quietly running around behind the scenes.
I offer a no-obligation chat, and I am always happy to signpost to free support too if that is the right route for you.
I also know families are busy, so I offer evening and weekend appointments where needed.
